Epidemiology and Incidence of Retinoblastoma in the Middle East: A Nationwide Study in Lebanon

Abstract: Background: Retinoblastoma, although a rare pediatric cancer, can lead to disastrous outcomes if not managed early. This mishap often happens in developing countries. Conversely, early diagnosis and treatment of retinoblastoma in developed countries were associated with a surge in RB1 gene carriers.Aim: The authors aimed to evaluate the incidence of retinoblastoma in the Lebanese population aged between 0 and 19 years according to age, sex, and other variables and compare the age-standardized incidence rates w… Show more

“…Additionally, excepting retinoblastoma, a significant downward trend was observed in the age group over 50 years, males, ocular surface, and skin/canthus/adnexal cancers over the 13-year period. This analysis showed a minimal increasing trend in ASIR of all ocular cancers for the period of 2004-2016; which was in line with those reported from Zimbabwe 27 , the United States 22 , India 26 , Thailand 25 , Lebanon 24 , and the 30 .…”

“…Population-based cancer registries provide the most practical data on cancer incidence and can enhance patient care by engaging clinicians along the research process 21 . The incidence of ocular cancer in both developed 22 and developing countries [23][24][25][26][27] had an increasing trend; however, it was more significant in developing countries. There is a lack of comprehensive analysis of recent incidence trends of ocular cancers in Iran.…”

“…While the lowest ASRs recorded were in Qatar with 0.4 and 0.3 cases per million person-years years for the 0-14 and 0-19 age groups respectively. Tunisia recorded the same ASRs as Lebanon, with 3.6 and 2.8 cases per million person-years for the 0-14 and 0-19 age groups, respectively (27). Rb patients with delayed diagnosis and referral are expected to present with a more advanced tumor stage (25,26,(28)(29)(30).…”

“…Although it accounts for about 3% of childhood malignancies in developed countries, there is evidence that this tumor occurs more frequently in Latin America and Africa developing countries (1). Studies show that in the age group from 0 to 14 years, the standardized incidence rate per one million children varies from 2.9 to 4.4 in Asian countries (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22), and from 3.4 to 6.5 in countries in Europe (13, 14, 23-26), from 3.2 to 4.7 in North America (5, 6, 10-12, 27, 28), from 6.7 in Central America, Guatemala (9), and from 4 to 5 in South American countries (8,29,30).…”
