Epidemiological Study and Classification of ICU Infections, Using the Carrier State Criterion

Abstract: This work aims at the better comprehension of epidemiology of ICU infections, using a classification based on the carrier state of the patient. This classification distinguishes the infections in primary endogenous (PE), secondary endogenous (SE) and exogenous (EX) infections. The material used was derived from ICU patients who were admitted to the ICU without being transferred from another ward of the same hospital or another hospital. Culture swabs were obtained from the pharynx and perineum of the patients … Show more

“…Statins up-regulate eNOS expression (130)(131)(132)(133), stimulate endothelial NO production (134) and increase the supply of the NO substrate Larginine (135), important in cardiac function. In an animal study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) post-myocardial infarction (MI) to assess remodelling, the effect of cerivastatin on attenuating hypertrophy after MI was completely abrogated by NOS inhibition (136)(137)(138).…”

“…Polyethylene debris determines an articular inflammatory reaction induced by macrophages and histiocytes (33)(34)(35)(36)(37). Synovial inflammation causes osteoclastic bone resorption with a consequent peri-prosthetic osteolysis and implant loosening (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43).…”

“…Neovascularization arising from the artery 's vasa vasorum contributes to lesion progression in many ways (39)(40)(41)(42). It provides another portal for leukocyte entry into established atherosclerotic lesions (43)(44)(45)(46). In addition, these fragile neovessels can favor focal intraplaque hemorrhage that provides a mechanism for the discontinuous increments seen in plaque growth.…”
