Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis with Splendore-Hoeppli Material in the Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)

Abstract: Abstract. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis, focal or diffuse with eosinophilic infiltrations of the stomach or intestine, has been described in human beings, cats, dogs, and horses. In this paper, we describe infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract with eosinophils accompanied by a circulating eosinophilia in six ferrets (Mustela putorius furoi. Clinical signs included chronic weight loss, anorexia, and diarrhea. The small intestines from five ferrets had diffuse infiltrates of eosinophils. This resulted in foc… Show more

“…Histopathologically, the diffuse form of eosinophilic infiltration and multiple granulomas in the cecum in this case appeared to be similar to that described in other species (Fox et al, 1992;Hendrick, 1981;Pass and Bolton, 1982). This was characterized by prominent infiltration by eosinophils with resultant thickening of the affected portion of the cecum.…”

“…11,14 In particular, the diffuse forms of gastroenteritis and mesenteric lymphadenitis are similar to the lesions described in ferrets, cats, horses, and dogs. 3,4,9,10 Many eosinophilic inflammatory lesions were found in the mes rats, yet cardiac lesions could not be found. Cardiac lesions are the most common feature of the chronic hypereosinophilia, including HES seen in humans.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Little is known about the cause and clinical behavior of this disorder, making recommendations for treatment difficult and the prognosis unclear. Surgical resection of the mass or treatment with corticosteroids and antiparasiticides has resulted in variable but often poor outcomes.…”
