Idiopathic Eosinophilic Masses of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Dogs

Abstract: Background: Eosinophilic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract of dogs occurs in numerous disorders, typically resulting in diffuse intestinal thickening. Rarely, eosinophilic masses have been reported. Objective: Describe a series of dogs with 1 or more idiopathic eosinophilic gastrointestinal masses (IEGM) to better characterize the clinical features, treatment, and prognosis.Animals: Seven dogs with 1 or more gastrointestinal masses composed primarily of eosinophilic infiltrates for which no underlying … Show more

“…Interestingly, in a descriptive study of cats with hepatic lipidosis only two of 60 cats had hypocholesterolaemia (Center et al 1993). A low cholesterol measurement has been observed to occur in 29-85% of dogs with protein-losing enteropathies (Littman et al 2000, Kull et al 2001, Lyles et al 2009. Congruent to our findings, liver disease was the most common disease associated with hypocholesterolaemia among hospitalised human medicine patients and also occurred in 31% of the study group (Oster et al 1981).…”

“…5 In spite of the established importance of dyslipidem ias in morbidity and mortality in critically ill people, the prevalence, causes and consequences of hypocholes terolemia in veterinary medicine remain poorly char acterized. Low serum cholesterol has been commonly reported in dogs with hepatic (acute liver failure, porto systemic shunts), [6][7][8] gastrointestinal (chronic enteropa thies, proteinlosing enteropathies) [9][10][11][12] and inflammatory (eosinophilic intestinal granulomas, immunemediated anemia) diseases, 13,14 as well as some neoplasia (histio cytic sarcomas). 15 As a predictor of morbidity and mor tality, cholesterol levels have been shown to be lower in nonsurvivor populations of dogs suffering from heat shock, parvoviral enteritis, aflatoxicosis and sepsis.…”
