Meta-analysis of the relationship of mycotoxins with biochemical and hematological parameters in broilers

A meta-analysis was carried out to study the association of mycotoxins with hematological and biochemical profiles in broilers. Ninety-eight articles published between 1980 and 2009 were used in the database, totaling 37,371 broilers. The information was selected from the Materials and Methods and Results sections in the selected articles and then tabulated in a database. Meta-analysis followed 3 sequential analyses: graphic, correlation, and variance-covariance. Mycotoxins reduced (P < 0.05) the hematocrit (-5%), hemoglobin (-15%), leukocytes (-25%), heterophils (-2%), lymphocytes (-2%), uric acid (-31%), creatine kinase (-27%), creatinine (-23%), triglycerides (-39%), albumin (-17%), globulin (-1%), total cholesterol (-14%), calcium (-5%), and inorganic phosphorus (-12%). Mycotoxins also altered (P < 0.05) the concentrations of alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase. A quadratic effect was observed on the relationship between the concentration of aflatoxin in diets and the serum concentration of alkaline phosphatase, γ-glutamyl transferase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase. The total protein concentration in blood was 18% lower (P < 0.05) in broilers challenged by aflatoxins compared with that of the unchallenged ones. The inclusion of antimycotoxin additives in diets with aflatoxins altered (P < 0.05) some variables (uric acid, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and γ-glutamyl transferase) in relation to the group that received diets with the mycotoxin and without the additive. The meta-analysis performed in this study allowed us to address and quantify systematically the relationship of mycotoxins with alterations in hematologic and biochemical profiles in broilers.

Hepatic and renal functions in broilers fed on diets with aflatoxins and natural clinoptiloliteAbstract -The objective of this study was to evaluate serum minerals and hepatic and renal activities in broiler chicks fed with diets containing aflatoxins and diets with aflatoxins and natural clinoptilolite clay. Five hundred and twenty-eight Ross male broiler chicks were grouped in six treatments with four replications each: T 1 -control: diet free from aflatoxins and clinoptilolite; T 2 -aflatoxins 5 ppm diet; T 3 -0.25% clinoptilolite diet; T 4 -aflatoxins 5 ppm and 0.25% clinoptilolite diet; T 5 -0.5% clinoptilolite diet; and T 6 -aflatoxins 5 ppm and 0.5% clinoptilolite diet. The birds were treated from the 1 st to the 42 nd day of age. Seventy-two birds were slaughtered. Calcium, phosphorus, urea, creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and gammaglutamil transferase (GGT) were all analyzed in serum. Aflatoxins decrease cholesterol; and 0.25% clinoptilolite decreases serum uric acid and has no effect at 0.5%. Aflatoxins plus 0.25% clinoptilolite diets decrease creatinine, uric acid and cholesterol serum levels. Also aflatoxins plus 0.5% clinoptilolite diets decrease creatinine and cholesterol, but increase GGT serum levels.

The present study aimed to determine whether the inclusion of a mixture based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae lysate, zeolite, silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, Carduus marianus extract, soy lecithin, and carbonate in the piglet diet would be able to minimize the negative effects caused by feed with aflatoxin; a study focusing on animal health and performance. Seventy-two entire male piglets (7.35 ± 1.17 kg) weaned with an average of 26 days were used, allotted into four groups, with six repetitions (pens) per group and three piglets/pen. The treatments were as follows: NoAfla-NoAntiMyc - negative control (without aflatoxin); Afla-NoAntiMyc - positive control (500 ppb of aflatoxin); NoAfla-AntiMyc - 1000 mg/kg of anti-mycotoxin mixture; Afla-AntiMyc - 500 ppb aflatoxin + 1000 mg/kg anti-mycotoxin. We evaluated the performance (feed intake - FI, weight gain - WG and feed:gain ratio- FGR) andblood variables (10 days between samples). On day 32, six pigs from each group (a total of 24 pigs) were slaughtered to collect fragments of the liver, intestine, and spleen for analysis of oxidants/antioxidants and histology. It was observed that piglets in the positive control group (Afla-NoAntiMyc) had lower body weight and weight gain when compared to the other groups during the experimental period. Also, piglets from Afla-NoAntiMyc consumed less feed between days 1 to 20 and 1 to 30 compared to NoAfla-NoAntiMyc. A considerable increase in liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in the piglets' serum of Afla-NoAntiMyc compared to other treatments, which indicates that the anti-aflatoxin blend worked. Fewer neutrophils and an increase in monocyte were observed in the piglets of Afla-NoAntiMyc compared to NoAfla-NoAntiMyc; changes that were not seen in the animals of Afla-AntiMyc. We did not see any change in the oxidant and antioxidant status in the piglet serum during the experimental period; different from what happened in Afla-NoAntiMyc piglets in the liver (higher glutathione reductase activity and levels of reactive oxygen species - ROS), in the spleen (higher levels of ROS) and the intestine/jejunum (reduction of nitrate/nitrite levels - NOx). Intestinal morphometry revealed that piglets from Afla-NoAntiMyc had higher villus height than the other groups, while the folded size was smaller in this group. The crypt depth was greater in the intestine of piglets in both treatments that consumed aflatoxin. In general, it is concluded that the consumption of aflatoxin B1 by piglets has negative impacts on the health and, consequently, the animals' performance; however, supplementation of the contaminated feed with an anti-mycotoxin blend was able to protect the piglets, minimizing the negative problems caused by the mycotoxin.
