Environmental factors affecting hatching of rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) resting eggs

Abstract: Hatching experiments were carried out on a population of Brachionus plicatilis (Dor strain) resting eggs produced in batch laboratory cultures under controlled conditions and then stored for at least one month at 4 ° C in the dark . Light was found to be obligatory for termination of dormancy . Over the temperature range of 10-30 ° C (at 9 .0% 0 salinity), hatching was optimal (40-70%) at 10-15 ° C and decreased linearly with the rise in incubation temperature . Resting eggs incubated over a salinity range of … Show more

“…This knowledge may provide some insight into when hatching should occur in situ, but very few data are available on when, or to what extent, hatching actually occurs during the year in natural systems. (Pourriot et al 1983), B. calyciflorus (Pourriot et al 1982), B. plicatilis (Blanchot and Pourriot 1982b;Minkoff et al 1983;Hagiwara and Hino 1989;Hagiwara et al 1989Hagiwara et al , 1995, Brachionus rubens (Pourriot et al 1980(Pourriot et al , 1981Blanchot and Pourriot 1982a), and E. senta and R. frontalis (Schröder unpubl. data).…”

“…In B. plicatilis, however, there is no strong evidence for or against such a pattern. In a strain of the species from Israel, Minkoff et al (1983) found that optimal hatching occurred at 16‰ and indicated that this salinity also was optimal for population growth. Hagiwara et al (1989) found that both population growth and hatching of diapausing eggs in Brachionus rotundiformis occurred at high rates for a broad range of salinities (8-32‰).…”

“…They differ morphologically from the amictic or asexually produced eggs (Wurdak et al, 1978 andreviewed in Gilbert, 1989). The diapausing embryos will resume development and hatch after an obligatory dormant period, in response to specific cues such as light, temperature, salinity, hydrogen peroxide and prostaglandins (Minkoff et al, 1983;Hagiwara et al, 1995). The hatched eggs usually develop into asexually reproducing amictic females (FA), until they encounter a mixis signal directing them to embark on sexual reproduction.…”

“…In the present study the hatching rate was 94,3% when food was C. muelleri. Minkoff, Lubzens and Kahan (1983) mentioned that at 9‰ salinity, hatching of B. plicatilis was optimal (40-70%) when the temperature was 10-30° C and decreased linearly with rise in incubation temperature. Light was obligatory for termination of dormancy.…”
