Environmental and social impacts of the increasing number of geothermal power plants (Büyük Menderes Graben—Turkey)

Abstract: The use of renewable energy is critical to the long-term development of global energy. Geothermal Power Plants (GPP) differ in the technology they use to convert the source to electricity (dual, single ash, double ash, back pressure, and dry steam) as well as the cooling technology they use (water-cooled and air-cooled). The environmental consequences vary depending on the conversion and cooling technology used. Environmental consequences of geothermal exploration, development, and energy generation includes l… Show more

“…Another environmental impact could be the initial requirement of water at the start of the operation of large flash power plants, particularly in areas with water scarcity, as well as the noise pollution that could affect wildlife. [52][53][54][55] To mitigate and minimize those potential environmental impacts of geothermal power projects, best practices have been implemented in all the world such as the use of advanced technologies to minimize air pollution, the use of closed-loop cooling system, and the use of turbine and geothermal well silencers [52][53][54][55] to reduce noise to acceptable levels to not disturb wildlife.…”

“…The result of the study claimed that geothermal plants could alter vegetation and wildlife habitat because they can reduce species diversity and community position. Additionally, Ozcelik 44 underlined that geothermal wastewater generates great danger for agricultural areas around the geothermal plants because geothermal wastewater contains heavy metals, salinity, and boron. Janzen et al 45 conducted a study for biomonitoring an insect community in the tropical…”

“…The energy of geothermal can be controlled by the industries whereas wind and solar energy depend on the climate change aspect though these also are the reliable renewable energy sources. Global warming also can be controlled by the geothermal energy activities by reducing the emissions of pollutants [7]. Geothermal energy has been extracted from the hydrothermal, geo-pressurized, hot dry rock and magma which are the reliable sources of geothermal energy production in the global aspect.…”
