PurposeThis study investigates the mediating role of organizational change capacity (OCC) in the relationship between the perception of extreme contexts and firm product and process innovation, which was not empirically investigated in the literature. In addition, this study explores the moderating role of the perception of extreme contexts-related variables, which were not operationalized in ordinary firms, on the relationship between OCC and firm product and process innovation.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire-based research was conducted to test the suggested hypotheses. The data were gathered from 90 firms during the peak period of COVID-19.FindingsThis study shows that OCC, which covers contexts, process and learning dimensions, fully mediates the relationship between the perception of extreme contexts and firm product and process innovation. Also, this study discovers that the perception of extreme contexts, including temporal ordering of extremity, the magnitude of consequences, proximity among people and operational deficiencies, positively moderate the relationship between OCC and firm product innovation.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has constraints inherited in survey design, primarily sampling and country context.Originality/valueThis study identifies, conceptualizes and operationalizes the term extreme context, conceptually argued for particular organizations/units in ordinary/mundane organization settings so far. In addition, this study extends the current understanding of how the perception of extreme contexts interacts with a firm's capability to increase innovation efforts. Further, this study shows how OCC mediates the relationship between extreme contexts and firm product and process innovation.

Relational Capabilities (RC) appear are valuable capabilities not only for performance but also to generate profitability. In this vein, this study performed a meta-analytic investigation of RC dimensions influencing firm financial performance. It also examined the role of mediating and moderating effects of knowledge management and partners integration influencing this association. From a meta-analytic procedure, 54 empirical studies were examined through random-effects model of Pearson's correlations as the effect size and a meta-analytical regression analysis (MARA) to examined moderation effects and meta-analytical structure equation modeling (MASEM) to examined mediation effects. Our findings confirm that firm financial performance is impacted directly and positively by RC itself excepting by the intrafirm relational capacity dimension. We also find that knowledge management and partner integration do not mediate positively the effect RC on firm financial performance. Further, RC dimensions effects on firm financial performance vary positively and negatively across partner integration and knowledge management moderation effects.Contribution/Originality: This study challenges RC into firms' business ecosystem as one of their sources of growth to create several opportunities. Therefore, by indicating a potential evolution of this dynamic capability in a more financial favorable comprehension, this article contributes to society, economy in general and to the science of business management.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the supplier selection criteria, relationship quality and level of collaboration in Asian food businesses, while also examining the link between these practices and business performance. The research focusses on food manufacturing and exporting companies in two emerging economies, China and Vietnam.Design/methodology/approachFood manufacturing and exporting companies in two emerging economies – China and Vietnam were surveyed and analysed to extract factors that reflect supplier management and business performance along with their relationship by factor analysis and hierarchical regression. Then, a two-step cluster analysis was applied to identify clusters based on supplier management and explore how different business performance groups manage their suppliers.FindingsFour clusters that are distinct sets of food firms with detailed references about their typical characteristics revealing their business performance and supplier management practices. Also, the study confirms that certificates, reliability and inspection results constitute the factor of quality-related criteria for food firms. It is an interesting insight into what firms prioritise in selecting and maintaining collaboration and relationships with suppliers that reflect actual demanding specifications for supplier conformity.Research limitations/implicationsThe study reveals the business status of the studied companies and each group's specific references, such as the criteria they prefer to select suppliers, the relationship quality and the level of collaboration.Originality/valueThe study is a useful reference for both researchers and practitioners to have a comprehensive view of supplier management in the food industry based on the viewpoint of Asian food manufacturers.
