Enhancing pressurized water extraction of β-glucan from barley grain by adding CO2 under hydrothermal conditions

Abstract: Subcritical water extraction is one of the green ways to isolate plants biomass components. In this work, it has been applied as a media to extract β-glucan from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The extractions were carried out at temperatures of 130-170 o C and a pressures of 10-40 MPa, using a semi-batch system. UV-vis spectra of liquid fraction products showed a high content of hemicelluloses, including glucan compounds. Results of FT-IR spectra analysis showed that β-glucan has been extracted from barley grain… Show more

“…However, other reports aiming to produce extracts rich in soluble sugars from fungi Grifola frondosa obtained high yields of total sugars using a HAE at 121 °C [27]. Moreover, previous reports aiming to achieve high yields of glucans from fungi and cereals reported variable yields and HAE conditions [28,29,30,31].…”

“…The intensities of several functional groups in the grains of paradise seeds decreased after treatment by SCCO2. Table 1 showed the typical functional groups and the infrared signal with the possible compounds [20,21]. The intensity of the broad band located at 3305 cm -1 which was attributed to O-H stretching of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups and the band at 2925 cm -1 was representative of C-H stretching became decline and narrow after applied SCCO2 extraction.…”

“…The increasing pressure and temperature (Fig. 7(c)) seem to an increase of CO2 diffusivity into the grains of paradise seeds and allow a more powerful swelling action to remove the substances in grains of paradise seeds [21]. Sovova 1994 [32] reported that SCCO2 has ability to rupture cells or the outer surface of matrix to access the solute substances.…”

“…At this condition (40 MPa), the increasing operating pressure may enhance CO2 diffusivity to penetrate into the Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn seeds. As a result, supercritical CO2 will result in a more powerful swelling action to disrupt and transfer the Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn seeds components [23]. Sovova [24] observed the vegetable oil extraction rate by supercritical CO2.…”
