Enhancement of innate immune system, survival and yield inPenaeus monodonreared in ponds usingStreptococcus phocae PI80

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary and water supplementation of probiotic Streptococcus phocae PI80 on growth, immune response and feed utilization of tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon in earthen ponds. The probiotic bacterium S. phocae PI80 was cultured in large fermenter (50 L) by adding additional carbon source in the form of molasses and glucose along with yeast extract as nitrogen source to enrich S. phocae PI80 biomass. This enriched S. phocae PI80 was administered to shrimp in … Show more

“…Among different probiotics, Bacillus spp. is one of the most common one so that many works have showed the positive effects of supplementing them on water quality, growth performance, immunity and controlling bacteria in shrimp (Kuebutornye, Abarike, & Lu, 2019;Pattukumar et al, 2014;Soltani et al, 2019;Zokaeifar et al, 2014). Specially, some studies investigated the effect of adding Bacillus spp.…”

“…The enhancement in growth performance in the present study may be explained by enhanced digestion and nutrient absorption by the probiotic bacteria. They can improve the nutrition by detoxifying potentially harmful compounds in feeds, denaturing potentially indigestible components in the diet (by hydrolytic enzymes including amylases and proteases), producing vitamins such as biotin and vitamin B12, producing inhibitory compounds and stimulating the host immunity (EL-Haroun et al, 2006;Kongnum and Hongpattarakere, 2012;Pattukumar et al, 2014). Probiotic bacteria can also increase digestibility and absorption of food by enhancing the population of beneficial microorganisms, microbial enzyme activity and improving the intestinal microbial balance which leads to increased growth performance (EL-Haroun et al, 2006;Sapcharoen and Rengpipat, 2013;Karthik et al, 2014;Pattukumar et al, 2014).…”

“…pathogen in term of better post-infection survival (Maeda et al, 2014). Streptococcus phocae PI80 could enhance the immune ability of Penaeus monodon and increase the shrimp production while it was in the pond water and feed (Pattukumar et al, 2014). Enterococcus faecium MC13, isolated from fish intestine, could abundantly secrete bacteriocin, a synthetic peptide/protein displaying a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria (Kanmani, 2011).…”
