Enhanced swelling and adsorption properties of AAm‐AMPSNa/clay hydrogel nanocomposites for heavy metal ion removal

Abstract: Novel type hydrogel‐clay nanocomposites based on the acrylamide (AAm)‐ 2‐acrylamido‐ 2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) sodium salt and clay were synthesized via in situ copolymerization in aqueous solution. Samples were characterized by determining total basic group (TGB) content and swelling degree, XRD analysis, and FTIR spectroscopy. Effects of monomer ratio and clay amount on the swelling properties of the samples were investigated. It was found that the hydrogel/clay nanocomposites exhibited improved s… Show more

“…The polymer/clay hydrogel composite has received great attention because of its relatively low production cost and high adsorption capacity for some dyes and metal ions (Li and Wang 2005;Ekici et al 2006;Kaşgöz et al 2008;Kundakcı et al 2008Kundakcı et al , 2009Gu and Ye 2009;Güçlü et al 2010;Mahdavinia and Asgari 2013). “…For instance, Tassanapayak et al [12] investigated the efficiency of clay in heavy ion sorption and found that it can be utilized as potential heavy metal adsorbents in wastewater treatment. Hasine et al [13] also studied the role of clay properties in heavy metal ion sorption and desorption with a series of experiments and found that soil composition would greatly affect the sorption efficiency. Li et al [14] pointed out that once the clay is contaminated, it is very difficult and it will take a very long time to remove the pollutants.…”

“…Superabsorbent composites are one group of such materials, in which the polymer matrix consists of hydrophilic polymers, mainly of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) [17] and its salts [18], poly(acrylamide) [19,20], 2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and their copolymers [21,22]. These hybrid materials, due to their functional groups, are efficient adsorbents of heavy metals cations (e.g., Pb 2?…”
