Novel composite sorbent AAm/MA hydrogels containing starch and kaolin for water sorption and dye uptake

Abstract: A novel polymer/clay composite sorbent based on acrylamide/maleic acid, starch and clay such as kaolin was synthesized with free radical solution polymerization by using ammonium persulfate/N,N,N ,Ntetramethylethylenediamine as redox initiating pair in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate as a crosslinker. Surface morphology was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy technique. FT-IR analysis was used to identify the presence of different repeating units in the semi-interpenetrating polym… Show more

“…Then, the optical absorption coefficient (α/S) was calculated using the reflectance data according to the Kubelka-Munk equation [36,43,44]. A plot of (αhν) 2 against hν (figure 5e and f) was linear confirming the direct band gap energy in composite films. Consequently, the calculated band gap energies for Poly 25 [45].…”

“…In recent years, polymers have been developed in different fields such as transport, electronic and pharmaceutical industries because of their notable material properties [1,2]. Nowadays, polymers are attracting great interest because of their low cost, low weight, easy processability, high-quality surface, easy fabrication of thick and thin samples, etc.…”

“…Figure shows a more wide peak at 3000–3500 cm −1 than spectra of AAm/ZA hydrogels. The reason of this wider peak can be due to the presence of a large number of OH groups in SP ,. The peak at 1000–1100 cm −1 corresponds to the Si–O stretching of the clay.…”

“…Exclusion of DMAEMA from the formula of hydrogels significantly increased hydrogel swelling and reduced the partition coefficient of the hydrogels for CBB. Controlled adsorption of cationic dyes, Toluidine Blue for example, into hydrogels has been achieved through incorporation of negatively charged functional groups such as maleic acid [57,58]. The decrease in CBB loading with exclusion of DMAEMA is to be expected as DMAEMA (pK a = 7.3-7.5) has an associated positive charge while CBB has an associated negative charge at physiologic pH [59][60][61].…”
