Enhanced Phytotoxicity of Bentazon with Organophosphate and Carbamate Insecticides

Abstract: The organophosphate insecticides, malathion [S-1,2-di (ethoxycarbonyl)ethylO, O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate], parathion (O, O-diethylO-4-nitrophenyl phosphorothioate) and diazinon (O,O-diethylO-2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidin-4-yl phosphorothioate) combined with bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide], caused severe injury to soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. ‘Corsoy′] and navy bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL. 'Seafarer′). Postemergence tank – mixture applications of bentazon with organophos… Show more

“…Compatibility of herbicide-insecticide combinations has been evaluated in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (Campbell and Penner 1982;Hayes et al 1979;Waldrop and Banks 1983) and in field corn (Zea mays L.) (Biediger et al 1992;Frazier et al 1993;Kapusta and Krausz 1992;Morton et al 1993), and has most often involved soil-applied insecticides. Huckaba and Coble (1990) reported a reduction in adult and larval soybean infesting thrips after POST application of the herbicide naptalam plus dinoseb.…”

“…Crop response to multiple pesticide applications has become a concern, especially as interactions between herbicides and organophosphate insecticides have been documented to cause foliar injury and reduce yields (2, 3,9,24). Field experiments conducted during 1989 indicated that severe com injury may occur if terbufos is applied in-furrow at planting and a sulfonylurea herbicide, nicosulfuron or primisulfuron {2- [[[[[4,6-bis(difluoromethoxy)-2-pyrimidinyl]amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]benzoic acid methyl ester}, is subse quently applied POST (11,19,22,25).…”

“…This mechanism also might be responsible for the increased control of both Echinochloa species with the mixture of bispyribac-sodium with diazinon observed in this study. Interactions of various kinds between herbicides and insecticides when applied in mixtures have been reported in the literature (Byrd and York 1988;Campbell and Penner 1982;Pankey et al 2004;Waldrop and Banks 1983). Recent studies reported that some fungicides also might reduce weed control when applied in mixture with certain herbicides (Lancaster et al 2005a,b,c,d).…”
