Enhanced optical sensitivity of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe_2) coated side polished fiber for humidity sensing

Abstract: In this paper, a side-polished fiber (SPF) coated with molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) is proposed, and its characteristic of relative humidity (RH) sensing is investigated. It is found in the experiment that an enhancement in RH sensitivity (0.321 dB/%RH) can be achieved in a very wide RH range of 32%RH to 73%RH for the proposed MoSe2 coated SPF (MoSe2CSPF). It is also shown that the MoSe2CSPF has a rapid response of 1s and recovery time of 4s, which makes the sensor … Show more

“…It has a low bandgap (1.1–1.5 eV) and an appreciable mobility (≈50 cm 2 V −1 s −1 ), which allow the fabrication of switchable transistors and sensitive photodetectors devices. Thanks to its optical properties, it also proved to be a good candidate for the fabrication of fiber-optic humidity detectors [ 83 ]. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), briefly illustrated in Figure 10 , is the most common technique to prepare very thin flakes directly on target substrates [ 84 , 85 , 86 ], for the fabrication of functional devices.…”

“…Different functional materials have been used to integrate with the fiber optics platform to enhance the sensitivities toward gas molecules as gas–matter–light interaction is much stronger than that of light gas 2a,6. Typical materials include polymers,1a,7 metal oxides coated with metallic catalysts,1b,8 and more recently 2D materials (e.g., graphene, graphene oxide,2d,10 and transition metal dichalcogenide materials) …”

“…Various types of optical fiber RH sensors have been proposed with different approaches. Firstly, the amplitude-based techniques detect the change of the optical intensity [3,4,5]. Secondly, the wavelength shift technique is immune to power fluctuation noise, when compared with the optical intensity technique [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13].…”
