Engaging in Collaborative Research: Focus on the Pharmacy Practitioner

Abstract: Research offers an opportunity for investigators to explore unanswered questions, highlight best practices, and engage in collaboration. Clinical research can engage health care professionals to identify treatments or procedures to enhance patient care, quality of life, and outcomes. Research may also include experiences in a unique practice site or teaching methodology of trainees, staff, or patients. The goal of research is to improve individual patient care via dissemination of knowledge through publication… Show more

“…For a residency program to be accredited by ASHP, the program must meet a standard that requires residents to “demonstrate ability to evaluate and investigate practice, review data, and assimilate scientific evidence to improve patient care and/or the medication use system.” 5 Although this standard implicitly requires a fundamental understanding of research principles, required completion of a research study is not explicitly stated. Research training and skill development are at the discretion of individual residency programs and may depend on the institution's mission and the expertise level of available residency research preceptors and mentors 35‐38 . In a retrospective review of PGY1 abstracts and a residency program director (RPD) survey, 55% of responders reported a formal research training program and 83% reported they provide dedicated research time to their trainees to complete their research projects at their institutions; nevertheless, the reported publication rate for PGY1 projects was low in the context of this analysis (1.8%) and other similar analyses 39 …”

“…This time should be protected throughout the year, as opposed to waiting until the end of the year, to allow for proper time management without impeding clinical coverage. Creating protected time for the project mentor is a more difficult task, especially for those pharmacists not affiliated with a school of pharmacy, and requires a change in culture that might take years to see fruition and implementation 38 …”

“…[5][6][7] In addition, trainees may not pursue publication for fear of manuscript rejection. 8,9 Predatory journals possibly capitalize on this fact and may provide a tempting medium for trainees because the peer-review process is not as robust as that of reputable journals, if it exists at all. E-mail communication is unrelenting and highly aggressive from predatory journals, often promising rapid review and time to publication.…”
