Energy metering optimization in flour mill plants for ISO 50001 implementation

The aim of this study is to investigate the ongoing energy management and energy efficiency practices in the industries of Peshawar division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The outcomes of this research shows that Khazana Sugar Mills, Caliph Pharmaceutical, Naguman Flour Mill have no or low awareness of energy management practices (awareness level mainly includes barriers to energy efficiency and drivers for energy efficiency) except FF steel mill. The major paces observed in lacking the awareness are (1) “understanding level of staff and workers about energy savings due to energy management practices” (2) “interest level of top managers for energy management implementation” (3) “awareness level regarding energy efficiency” (4) “lack of technical competence” (5) “use of standardized procedures”. When the industry managers were inquired about the relationship with energy service providers it is found that there is absolute absence of energy engineers, relationship with energy consultancies and long-term energy strategy in all the industries. It was also found that there is lack of using renewable energy technologies in all industries as they were relying upon using the generators during the blackout hours. In terms of percentage, the energy saving factor of 36 kWh/day has also observed with the replacement of fluorescent tube lights with light emitting diode (LED) tube lights. Proper maintenance and energy management practices in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) would also save energy in a significant amount. The study shows that there is an overall improvement factor of 4% to 8% if the inclusion of energy management and energy efficiency practices would have been applied in all the stated industries.

Energy efficiency management according to ISO 50001: A case study in the brick industry

This research presents the methodology and results of implementing energy efficiency management in the brick industry, given the problem of high electricity consumption in the production processes. Based on the ISO 50001 standard, energy efficiency management has as its structure the PHVA methodology of the Deming cycle and indicators that meet the standard's requirements. Energy consumption in tons of bricks produced is established as an indicator, allowing proposals for improving performance and efficient energy use, as well as implementing a management system, minimizing energy waste, and implementing engineering tools in the processes. Energy consumption data were collected before and after implementation, these data were analyzed, and the decrease in monthly electricity consumption was verified through a pre-test conducted at the beginning of the research, recording parameters of 543,800 kWh. After implementation, a post-test was conducted, recording parameters of 500,296 kWh, resulting in a saving of 43,504 kWh; in monetary units, the saving is S/18,067.21 for each month of production. Obtaining an annual decrease of 522,048 kWh, represented in monetary units S/216,806.53 (US$ 59,891.30 exchange rate S/3.62). Therefore, it is proven that implementing the methodology is feasible through the management of energy efficiency based on ISO 50001 and contributes strategically to the brick industry by increasing the efficiency associated with the reduction of 8% monthly electricity consumption.

The present research consists in the application of statistical tools for the monitoring of the energy efficiency of indicators in productive processes that comply with the requirements of ISO 50001:2011. This paper presents the methodology and the results in terms of forecasting (SGE) for the consumption of electric energy in the manufacture of H-10 blocks using the STATGRAPHICS Centurion XV Software. The outcomes demonstrated the stabilization of the energy efficiency associated with an increase of production without investment by purchasing new equipment. That is to say, that only with the innovation and the follow-up of the process through applied management technologies the resources of the company can beoptimized, besides the adoption of a culture of energy management in an efficient way. The energy efficiency is optimized taking into account all the variables that influence the production process, besides performing preventive maintenance of the equipment in order to stabilize and control theparameters involved in the manufacture of masonry products for construction.
