Energy and macronutrient intakes in Brazil: results of the first nationwide individual dietary survey

Abstract: Objective: To characterize energy and macronutrient intakes in Brazil and to describe the top food items contributing to energy and macronutrient intakes. Design: Two non-consecutive 24 h dietary records were collected and energy and macronutrient data were adjusted for usual intake distribution. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA with the Bonferroni post hoc test were analysed using SAS version 9·1. Means and standard deviations were estimated for sex, age and income strata. “…Also worth noting is the possible effect on our results of the well-known multiethnic structure of the Brazilian population [27]. Despite the racial background of the older women was not considered herein, the authors believe that an influence (if any) from this aspect might have been neglectable since current literature lacks evidence for disparities on usual dietary pattern across urban Brazilians from different ethnic groups [28][29][30]. IL8 is involved in the activation and recruitment of neutrophils [31] and stimulates monocyte adhesion to vascular endothelium [32].…”

“…The results of the latter study showed that in comparison with the lowest quartile of income, individuals with special reference to females in the highest income quartile had greater mean intakes of energy, added sugar, alcohol, animal protein, total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat and Trans fat. 13 It is possible that in a community where women of reproductive age group are having less macro nutrient intake, the similar picture may prevail for adolescent girls as well. This is substantiated by a study conducted on rural adolescent girls of Varanasi district which revealed that more than two third adolescent girls had inadequate intake of calorie, protein and fat and average intakes of macro and micronutrients (except vitamin A) in comparison to RDA.…”

“…These changes are exemplified by the increased intake of unhealthy food groups such as oils, fats and sugar and, consequently, of macronutrients such as saturated fatty acids . Imbalanced proportions of macronutrients in the diet are linked to weight gain, increased risk of chronic non‐communicable diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and some types of cancer . The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that at least 2.8 million people die each year as a result of being overweight or obese in the world, and 70% of the mortality rate in Iran was because of chronic diseases associated with obesity…”
