Comparative Pathology of Aging Great Apes

The great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) are our closest relatives. Despite the many similarities, there are significant differences in aging among apes, including the human ape. Common to all are dental attrition, periodontitis, tooth loss, osteopenia, and arthritis, although gout is uniquely human and spondyloarthropathy is more prevalent in apes than humans. Humans are more prone to frailty, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, longevity past reproductive senescence, loss of brain volume, and Alzheimer dementia. Cerebral vascular disease occurs in both humans and apes. Cardiovascular disease mortality increases in aging humans and apes, but coronary atherosclerosis is the most significant type in humans. In captive apes, idiopathic myocardial fibrosis and cardiomyopathy predominate, with arteriosclerosis of intramural coronary arteries. Similar cardiac lesions are occasionally seen in wild apes. Vascular changes in heart and kidneys and aortic dissections in gorillas and bonobos suggest that hypertension may be involved in pathogenesis. Chronic kidney disease is common in elderly humans and some aging apes and is linked with cardiovascular disease in orangutans. Neoplasms common to aging humans and apes include uterine leiomyomas in chimpanzees, but other tumors of elderly humans, such as breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers, are uncommon in apes. Among the apes, chimpanzees have been best studied in laboratory settings, and more comparative research is needed into the pathology of geriatric zoo-housed and wild apes. Increasing longevity of humans and apes makes understanding aging processes and diseases imperative for optimizing quality of life in all the ape species.

Amaç: Kliniğimizde postmenopozal kanama nedeniyle histerektomi yapılan olgularda, histopatolojik sonuçların değerlendirilmesi.Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma, kliniğimize Nisan 2007-Haziran 2013 tarihleri arasında postmenopozal kanama nedeniyle başvuran ve histerektomi yapılan 74 olgunun retrospektif olarak değerlendirilmesi ile yapıldı. Hastaların yaşları, parite durumları, boy kilo indeksleri ve histerektomi sonrası çıkan uterusun histopatolojik sonuçları değerlendirildi. Bulgular:Olguların ortalama yaşları 57.1 ±7.9 idi. Endometrial histopatolojik değerlendirme sonuçları sırasıyla endometrial polip (%25), endometrial hiperplazi (%20.9), proliferatif endometrium (%20.9), myom uteri (%16.6), atrofik endometrium (%6.9), endometrium kanseri (%9.7)idi.Sonuç: Postmenopozal kanama nedeniyle histerektomi yapılan olgularda en sık karşılaşılan endometrium patolojisi endometrial poliptir. Postmenopozal dönemde en sık endometrial atrofiye bağlı kanama olmasına rağmen histopatolojik sonuçlarda az tespit edilmiştir. Bunun nedeni atrofi tedavisinde ilk seçenek olarak izlem ve tıbbı tedavi olması olabilir.Anahtar kelimeler: Histerektomi; Patoloji; Postmenopozal kanama Aims: To evaluate histopathological results in hysterectomy materials of patients with postmenopausal bleeding in our clinic. Materials-Methods:This study is conducted by retrospective assessment of 72 patients who underwent hysterectomy due to postmenopausal bleeding between April 2007 and June 2013 in our clinic. Age, parite, body mass index of patients and, histopathological examination of the uterus after hysterectomy were assessed.Results: Mean age of the subjects was 57.1 ±7.9. Histopathologic diagnoses were as follows: endometrial polyp (25%), endometrial hyperplasia (20.9%), proliferative endometrium (20.9%), myoma uteri(16.6%), atrophic endometrium (6.9%), endometrium cancer(9.7%). Conclusion:The most common endometrial pathologia in patients who underwent hysterectomy due to postmenopausal bleeding was endometrial polyp. Although the most common reason of postmenopausal bleeding is atrophic endometrium, atrophic endometrium is detected in the histopathological examination as a few. The reason is that the first option treatment can be medical treatment and observation.
