The aim of this study was to compare ovarian response and embryo yield of Day 0 protocol in Angora goats (AG) and indigenous Kilis goats (KG) in the non-breeding season. A total of 16 Angora goats (AG group) and 11 Kilis goats (KG group) were used in this study. In the synchronization process, after controlled internal drug release withdrawal, when estrus signs were observed, natural mating was performed. Ovarian response was determined by synchronized laparotomy 6 days after natural mating, and number of corpora lutea (CL) was recorded. Embryos were collected and morphologically evaluated by stereomicroscope. Synchronization rates did not differ between AG (88%, 14/16) and KG group (91%, 10/11). In AG and KG groups, the proportion of CL on the right (44% and 53%, respectively) and left (56% and 47%, respectively) ovaries were similar. The CL number per animal did not differ significantly between the two breeds and was determined as 4.4 ± 0.90 in AG group and 6.4 ± 1.44 in KG group. Transferable embryo yields were significantly higher in AG group (31/42, 74%) compared to KG group (16/46, 35%) in the non-breeding season (P < 0.01). In conclusion, it is suggested that the day 0 protocol can be used for goat superovulation in the non-breeding season; however, transferable embryo yields are affected by the breed.

Summary:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment methods of progestagen with PMSG in Awassi ewes out of the breeding season. A total of 48 ewes were divided into four groups equally. In Group I, vaginal sponges (30 mg fluorogestone acetate; FGA) were administered to ewes for seven days; afterwards vaginal sponge removal at the end of 7 th days and new vaginal sponge replaced for seven days in the same group. Vaginal sponges were administered for 7 days and 14 days in Group II and Group III, respectively. Group IV (Control) served as control group. In all experimental groups, 500 IU PMSG was given at sponge removal. Parameters such as estrus response rate, pregnancy and lambing rates, interval from sponge withdrawal to onset of estrus, duration of estrus and fecundity were evaluated. There were no significant differences in terms of estrus response rate, pregnancy rate, lambing rate, and fecundity between the Group I, II and III (p>0.05). In addition to this, any difference in the duration of estrus was not observed in all groups. However, variations in the interval from sponge removal to estrus was found significant (p<0.05) differences between Group II (53±3.37 h) and Group III (41.5±1.81 h). A slight increase in progesterone levels was observed after ram introduction, but a significant decrease in progesterone levels was found after two weeks from ram introduction (p<0.05). It was concluded that there was no advantage of using two subsequent sponge treatments for achieving high progesterone concentration during treatment. In addition, short-term sponge treatment (7d) was found as effective as long-term sponge treatment in Awassi ewes out of the breeding season.Key words: Anestrus, awassi, estrus response, ewe, progestagen Ardışık iki kısa süreli, kısa süreli ve uzun süreli progestagen uygulamasının üreme mevsimi dışındaki İvesi koyunlarının dölverimine etkisi Özet: Bu çalışmanın amacı, üreme mevsimi dışında İvesi koyunlarında PMSG ile birlikte farklı progestagen uygulamalarının etkinliğini araştırmaktı. RESUMO -Avaliou-se a resposta ovariana, usando ultrassonografia transretal, à aplicação de duas injeções de prostaglandina (PGF 2α ) em diferentes intervalos. Foram utilizadas 14 fêmeas ovinas da raça Bergamácia durante a estação reprodutiva, sendo que todas receberam uma dose intramuscular de um análogo de PGF 2α . As ovelhas foram distribuídas em dois grupos (n = 7). Em um dos grupos, a PGF 2α foi administrada sete dias (PG7) e, no outro, nove dias (PG9) depois da ovulação, quando o folículo dominante da onda 2 encontrava-se nas fases de crescimento e platô, respectivamente.Examinaram-se os ovários diariamente, utilizando-se um ultrassom Aloka 500, provido de um transdutor linear transretal de 7,5 MHz. A ultrassonografia foi iniciada um dia antes da segunda aplicação de prostaglandina até o dia 10 depois da ovulação em ambos os grupos. Amostras de sangue foram colhidas, via punção jugular, a cada dia, para quantificação de progesterona. As concentrações plasmáticas de progesterona mostraram-se menores no PG7 quando comparado com o PG9, imediatamente antes do tratamento com a PGF 2α (4,10 ± 0,17 vs 4,91 ± 0,29 ng/mL; respectivamente). A média do diâmetro máximo atingido pelo folículo dominante da onda 2 foi maior no grupo tratado PG7 comparado com o PG9 (5,5 ± 0,19 vs 4,29 ± 0,26 mm). Houve efeito do dia nos folículos totais. A quantidade de folículos pequenos (2-2,5 mm) foi maior (4,57 ± 0,78 versus 8,42 ± 1,36) no dia 6, nos grupos PG7 e PG9, respectivamente, mas não foram observadas mudanças nos folículos médios (3-3,5 mm) entre os grupos tratados. A proporção de folículos grandes (4 mm) aumentou depois da luteólise; os valores foram menores nas ovelhas tratadas no PG7 e mantiveram-se estáveis no tempo no PG9.Em ovelhas com rápida e completa luteólise, a ovulação ocorre no folículo dominante da onda 2 em fêmeas tratadas sete ou nove dias após a ovulação.Palavras-chave: folículo dominante, onda folicular, progesterona (P 4 ), sincronização, ultrassonografia Effect of time of prostaglandin administration on follicular response in ewes during oestrous cycleABSTRACT -The purpose of this study was to evaluate ovarian response, using transrectal ultrasonography, to two injections of Prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α ) given at different intervals.
