Endemic climbing cavy Kerodon acrobata (Rodentia: Caviidae: Hydrochoerinae) from dry forest patches in the Cerrado domain: new data on distribution, natural history, and morphology

Abstract: The distribution, natural history, and morphology of Kerodon acrobata were updated based on nine new collected specimens totalling 14 known specimens. Two new localities were added to the distribution range of this species. Data on habitat use indicated that the presence of this rodent is associated to the cerrado sensu stricto and seasonally dry tropical forest patches in the northeastern Cerrado domain. Analyses of these specimens increased the range of body size and craniodental measurements for K. acrobata… Show more

“…This paper stands out for being the only one based on fossil material and including recent (non-fossil) material deposited in a scientific collection (the Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, MN). Bezerra & Marinho-Filho (2010) In general, the new records added here are expected, since these species occur within neighboring states (Bianconi & Pedro 2017;Sartore et al 2017;Zortéa et al 2017). It is important to mention that the previous record of E. perotis for Goiás, provided by Sartore et al (2017) and based on the study of Eger (1977), is erroneous.…”

“…Since the second half of the 20 th century, surveys of mammals in both the Caatinga and the Cerrado covered numerous sites (Mares et al 1989, Marinho-Filho and Veríssimo 1997, Marinho-Filho et al 1997, Bonvicino and Bezerra 2003, Bonvicino et al 2005, 2012, Bezerra et al 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, Astúa and Guerra 2008, Oliveira et al 2008, Bocchiglieri et al 2010, Bruna et al 2010, Silva et al 2015; see also Marinho-Filho et al 2002, Carmignotto et al 2012 and references therein; see also citations under Species Accounts). Although biodiversity inventories in the Caatinga and the Cerrado are far from being complete, both biomes are relatively well sampled when compared to other biomes (e.g., the Amazon).…”
