Emergence of nosocomial associated opportunistic pathogens in the gut microbiome after antibiotic treatment

Abstract: Introduction According to the Centers for Disease Control’s 2015 Hospital Acquired Infection Hospital Prevalence Survey, 1 in 31 hospital patients was infected with at least one nosocomial pathogen while being treated for unrelated issues. Many studies associate antibiotic administration with nosocomial infection occurrence. However, to our knowledge, there is little to no direct evidence of antibiotic administration selecting for nosocomial opportunistic pathogens. … Show more

“…By occupying the niche, the commensals microbes avoid the growth of potentially harmful pathogens [ 171 ]. Furthermore, a dysbiosis in the microbiome will triggers a change from commensal relationship to pathogenic relationship [ 269 , 270 ]. In many cases, the decrease of diversity will increase the competition between the survivors and highly competitive opportunistic pathogens such as ESKAPE pathogens or Staphylococcus will become the dominant member of the microbiome.…”

“…In particular, DARS developed a cell-based method to measure the rate at which antibiotic resistance appears. This hollow fiber bioreactor system ( 116 ) administers drugs to cells using human pharmacokinetic profiles to identify drug combinations that slow the development of resistance. Next-generation sequencing is being used to investigate the genetic and epigenetic biomarkers of antibiotic resistance and to investigate the effects of combinations of oral antibiotics on bacterial genomes and the gut microbiome ( 117 ) high-through put screening assay to identify optimal drug combinations for different organisms.…”

“…Competition with the endogenous community, coupled with the host’s immune system, can often control infections. Indeed, some opportunistic pathogens are commonly resident in the gut of most mammals but do not trigger disease unless the endogenous microbial community is disrupted by stress or more often in response to antibiotic drugs that decimate the resident microbes creating an opportunity for pathogenic strains to rapidly expand ( Raplee et al, 2021 ; Abd El-Hack et al, 2022 ).…”
