Embelin as a Potential Drug Molecule: A Review

Abstract: Embelia ribes are traditionally used medicinal remedies in India. Embelin is a hydroxyl benzoquinone with alkyl substitution and is considered as one of the main constituents. Embelin has various biological activities includes anticonvulsant, antidepressant, antidiabetic, antifertility, antitumor etc. This review is an overall overview of the existing pharmacology of E. ribes, helping to fuel further research in the various unexplored activities that are attributable to this plant.

“…Furthermore, embelin has shown protective effects against acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats. Importantly, it exhibits a high safety margin, with an LD50 of up to 2000 mg/kg body weight in rats and mice, indicating a wide therapeutic index [6,7]. Berberine is another naturally occurring compound known to possess extremely promising biological and pharmacological activities [8].…”

“…Emb exerts compelling antitumor activity against a plethora of cancer types via inhibiting multiple pathways. 9 Conventional chemotherapeutic drugs and most of the small-molecular anticancer agents cause consequential damages in terms of severe side effects to the surrounding healthy tissues and suffers from limitations like poor bioavailability, quick renal/blood clearance, enhanced multi-drug resistance, low accumulation in tumors, and so forth. To tackle these issues, different approaches were devised including the development of drug-delivery systems, gene therapy, combination therapy, targeted therapy, and many more.…”
