“…Among various activation dependent markers studied, no elevation in baseline expression of platelet CD63 was found in depression (Walsh et al, 2002a;Lederbogen et al, 2004) or schizophrenia (Walsh et al, 2002b). Unexpectedly, CD63 negatively correlated with hyperarousal scores in our study.…”

“…In activated platelets GPIb/V/IX and the integrin a IIb b 3 serve additionally as secondary collagen receptors (Blockmans et al 1995;Wu 1996;Levy-Toledano 1999;Ryningen and Holmsen 1999;Abrams and Brass 2001). Walsh et al (2002) have observed a significant increase in the number of platelet receptor Á integrin a IIb b 3 Á in schizophrenic patients compared with healthy controls. The increase in expression of a IIb b 3 on platelets of schizophrenic patients may be a result of translocation of a IIb b 3 from internal pools in the early stages of platelet activation.…”

“…Our data demonstrate that tested antypsychotics have various effects on platelets aggregation but never cause increase of aggregation. This phenomenon can be explained by significantly increased number of integrin a IIb b 3 receptors on platelets in drug-naive patients with first episode of schizophrenia compared with healthy controls (Walsh et al 2002). This serious medical problem is very important for clinicians and demands continuation of studies for recognition all causes of thromboembolic disorders and their consequences in schizophrenic patients.…”

“…Platelet response to the action of thrombin or PAF in schizophrenic patients may depend upon the modulated access of specific platelet surface receptors, which can result from changes in platelet membrane. Walsh et al35 demonstrated that the number of platelet integrin receptors (α IIb /β3) involved in platelet aggregation in schizophrenic patients is significantly higher in comparison with the platelets of healthy subjects 35. The increased expression of platelet integrin receptors for fibrinogen in schizophrenic patients may be responsible for increased platelet reactivity, which probably contributes to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in schizophrenia 3638.…”
