Electrochemical characterization and determination of carbamazepine as pharmaceutical standard and tablet content on gold electrode

Abstract: The anodic behaviour of carbamazepine (CBZ), an anticonvulsant drug, has been studied on gold electrode in 0.1 mol dm-3 phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 by using cyclic voltammetry. It has been found that the value of the oxidative current of pure CBZ at +0.90 V is a linear function of the concentration in a range from 1.0?10-7 to 1.0?10?4 mol dm?3. The detection of CBZ in the concentration of 1.0?10-8 mol dm-3 is among the lowest that have been reported for this drug using voltammetric techniques.… Show more

“…The anodic behavior of carbamazepine (CBZ), an anticonvulsant drug (Fig. 2.38 ), has been studied on gold electrode in 0.1 mol dm −3 phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 by using cyclic voltammetry [ 17 ]. It has been found that the value of the oxidative current [ 16 ] of pure CBZ at 0.90 V vs. SCE is a linear function of the concentration in a range from 1.0 × 10 −7 to 1.0 × 10 −4 mol dm −3 .…”

“…2 It is one the safest and most effective anti-epileptic drugs used in the treatment of partial and generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and also used in the treatment of other neurological diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, restless leg syndrome, stress disorders and neuromyotonia. 3,4 Carbamazepine works by blocking the voltage-dependent sodium channels, and its therapeutic level in the blood is 4-12 μg mL −1 . 5,6 The daily dose range of CBZ varies between 200 and1200 mg, and its bioavailability is quite high.…”

“…Several analytical techniques have been developed for CBZ sensing including fluorescence probing (Ma et al, 2018), liquid chromatography (Yan and Row, 2006), and electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry (Veiga et al, 2010), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) (Lin et al, 2012), amperometric techniques (De Carlo et al, 2015), enzyme modified immunoassay, and so on (Contin et al, 1985). However, most of these analytical techniques involve complicated sample preparation steps, resulting in unspecified impurities, and the sample disregard limit is high, thus resulting in CBZ waste generation (Trišović et al, 2014) in the test solutions. Further, measurement of the enzyme activity is complex; biorecognition of the analyte is crucial, and sensitivity was found to be very less in enzyme-modified immunoassays (Paxton, 1982).…”
