Electrical Tomography Applied to the Detection of Subsurface Cavities

Abstract: Abstract:We have analyzed the geoelectric response produced by three cavities cut into different geological substrata of granite, phyllite, and sandstone that had previously been characterized by direct methods. We also examined a mining void excavated in granite. In each case, we applied three different geoelectric arrays (Wenner-Schlumberger, Wenner and dipole-dipole) and several inter-electrode spacings. The survey results suggest that electrical resistivity tomography is a viable geophysical tool for the d… Show more

“…The traditional ground resistivity methods are used to detect the water-bearing structures in mines, including electrical section method and high-density electrical method in a single tunnel (Maillol et al, 1999;van Schoor, 2005;Martínez-López et al, 2013;Martínez-Pagán et al, 2013). These methods belong to electrical sounding method, with which two-dimensional (2D) vertical geoelectrical information is acquired in a single tunnel to identify the water-bearing structures.…”

“…A total of 160 electrodes were used at the active landslide area, reaching a maximum depth of 55 m. The RES2DINV software package was used to assess the measurements made and the profile graphics present the results. This software package is based on the least-squares method using an enforced smoothness constraint, modified by a quasi-Newtonian optimisation technique (Martines-López et al 2013;Ekinci et al 2013;Drahor et al 2006).…”
