This research investigates the tribological characteristics and sustainability of WS 2 deposited Al 6061-T6 surface under dry sliding conditions and optimizes the wear parameters to enhance the tribological behaviour and discuss its sustainability. The experiment used the Box-Behnken design, which examines the effective interaction between dry sliding parameters and specific wear rate (SWR) and friction coefficient (COF). By varying the load (L), sliding velocity (V) and distance (D), the wear behaviour of WS 2 deposition against EN 31 steel was examined through the pin-on-disc experiment. Grooving, debris formation, polishing, tribolayer, ploughing, transfer material, smearing, delamination and pitting are observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. In this present work, an attempt has been made to deposit the WS 2 layer on the Al 6061-T6 alloy surface through the electrical discharge deposition (EDD) technique. Specified deposition parameters, namely powder concentration (C p ), pulse-on time (P on ), and gap voltage (V g ) with various levels considered during the EDD process. The experimentation was performed for analysing the results of deposition parameters on material deposition rate (MDR), surface roughness (SR), microhardness (MH), layer thickness (LT), and surface characteristics of the WS 2 layer were examined. The results addressed the various intermetallic compounds formed on the deposited surface. A multi-objective optimisation using Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology was utilised to conduct the deposition process. To predict and optimise the appropriate MDR, SR, MH, and LT, the quadratic model was developed using regression analysis and analysis of variance. Based on the developed model, the interaction effects of deposition parameters on the EDD process were explored. The optimal depositing parameters are determined by maximising the MDR and MH and minimising the SR and LT. The validation test results confirm that experimental data are good in agreement with the predicted results, and hence, the model is feasible to predict the responses adequately. The tribological study was carried out for the optimised condition, and surface characteristics on the worn-out surface were analysed. When compared to the base material, the obtained results show a lower coefficient of friction and specific wear rate.

In present exploration, Electric Discharge Alloying/Coating (EDA/C) is made over duplex stainless steel as alloying elements of nickel, graphite, copper (electrode) and pyrolysis carbon from oil together with substrate material results in metal matrix composite coating. Coating possess average hardness value of 1018 HV 0.5 four times higher and lowered specific wear rate of 1.18 × 10−5 mm3/N m with an improved average friction coefficient of 0.3 through Pin on Disc (POD) wear tester. Metallurgical properties of the coating are analysed through surface topography by 3D optical profilometer, coating microstructure over and across with elemental distribution are identified by electron microscope (SEM) attached with Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Phase transform from δ and γ of cementite with meta stable iron carbide appeared as austenitic structure are identified through Electron Probe Micro Analyser (EPMA) and by X-ray diffraction. This meta stable carbides together with alloying elements provides improved tensile and bonding strength at room temperature were else copper controls further phase transformation. Copper shows stick slip at lower loading up to 40 N then restores in temperature arises during frictional contacts makes carbon and carbide to plasticity state under room temperature provides self-lubricant properties.
