“…Aubergine (eggplant; Solanum melongena ) is the third most economically important crop belonging to the Solanum genus after potato and tomato (Rotino et al ., ). It is cultivated worldwide with a total production of over 49 million tonnes reported in 2013, mainly in Asia (93% of both world production and harvested area), particularly China, India, Indonesia and Iran, followed by Africa and the subtropical areas, including the Mediterranean regions (predominantly Egypt, Turkey, Spain and Italy) (http://faostat3.fao.org/browse/Q/QC/).…”

“…Indeed, the two fungal wilts caused by Vd (Fradin & Thomma, ) and Fom (Cappelli et al ., ) are among the most serious diseases of aubergine. Partial resistance/tolerance to most pathogens was found within the aubergine gene pool, but the resistance levels are often insufficient for effective use in breeding programmes (Rotino et al ., ). Moreover, molecular and phenotypic characterizations of Fusarium oxysporum showed different levels of virulence in the different isolates collected (Altinok et al ., ) that were not always correlated by the resistances identified in the aubergine gene pool.…”

“…Unfortunately the latter remain largely unexploited and a limited number of reports on the use of the variation available in the wild species has been reported [17,20,28] while, to our knowledge, no modern commercial varieties of eggplants carry introgression from wild species.…”
