Insecticidal activity of neem oil against Gyropsylla spegazziniana (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) nymphs on Paraguay tea seedlings

Gyropsylla spegazziniana (Paraguay tea ampul) is one of the most important pests of Paraguay tea plants, and prohibition of synthetic insecticide use for control of this pest has led to the search for alternative methods. This laboratory study aimed to compare different control strategies for G. spegazziniana, utilizing a commercial neem seed oil product. Paraguay tea seedlings were treated with neem oil solution both pre-and post-infestation with 5 th instar nymphs. The systemic action of neem oil was also evaluated by treating plant soil with the neem oil solution, followed by transfer of the insects to plants 24 h post-treatment. Spray treatments were effective against the pest, especially post-infestation (80% mortality), demonstrating the potential of neem oil for control of the Paraguay tea ampul. No significant effects were observed with respect to systemic activity.Keywords: Gyropsylla spegazziniana, botanical insecticide, alternative control. Atividade inseticida de óleo de nim contra ninfas deGyropsylla spegazziniana (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) em mudas de erva-mate ResumoGyropsylla spegazziniana (ampola da erva-mate) é uma das principais pragas da erva-mate, tanto em áreas de plantio como em viveiros. A proibição do uso de inseticidas para o controle de pragas da cultura tem levado à busca de alternativas. Este trabalho visou avaliar comparativamente, em laboratório, estratégias de aplicação de um produto comercial à base de óleo de nim sobre G. spegazziniana, em solução a 5%. Os testes foram realizados em mudas de erva-mate, tratadas pré e pós-infestação com ninfas de 5º instar do inseto, para avaliação de contato. Também, avaliou-se a ação sistêmica do óleo de nim, aplicando-se a solução do produto no solo da muda de erva-mate, seguido da transferência dos insetos após 24 h. Verificou-se que os tratamentos via pulverização foram eficientes contra a praga, principalmente na aplicação pós-infestação (80% de mortalidade), comprovando o potencial inseticida do óleo de nim contra a ampola-da-erva-mate em mudas. Entretanto, em relação à atividade sistêmica, não foram observados efeitos consideráveis sobre a praga.Palavras-chave: ampola da erva-mate, planta inseticida, controle alternativo.

Genotoxicidade do composto Azadiractina avaliado através do Ensaio Cometa utilizando Danio rerio (Hamilton 1822) como organismo teste ABSTRACTAzadirachtin consists of the oil obtained from dried seeds of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (Family: Meliaceae). It is marketed as a biopesticide for pest control in organic farming as it is an "eco-friendly" agent. Its action occurs preventing the development of the larvae being applied by spraying on the leaves (1.2g/100 L). Residues of pesticides, including biopesticides, can cause deleterious effects to organisms that are not their target. Thus, the present work evaluated the genotoxic effect resulting from the exposure of azadirachtin for 7 days in Danio rerio -Hamilton 1822 fish, using Comet Assay (CA) and mortality by survival analysis. Three test groups (1.2, 0.3 and 0.15 μg/mL), one negative control (NC) and one positive control (PC) (0.1 mg/L CuSO4) were exposed. The CA results suggest a genotoxicity effect at the 3 concentrations since both the Damage Frequency (DF) and the Damage Index (DI) using the D. rerio erythrocytes were significantly increased in relation to the CN. Mortality was 100% within 13 days after exposure to azadirachtin suggesting high toxicity. Therefore, the use of azadirachtin biopesticide should be carried out with caution so as not to increase environmental contamination, especially in aquatic ecosystems.

-the incidence of grapevine decline and dye back is quite severe in grapevine-growing regions of southern Brazil, especially in the midwest of the State of Santa catarina. Field studies on problematic areas identified the presence of the Brazilian ground pearl or margarodes (Eurhizococcus brasiliensis Hempel) and soil fungi (Cylindrocarpon, Fusarium and others) associated with the disease. Soil characteristics such as high clay content and poor aeration were associated with the problem. to evaluate the effect of pre-planting tillage in reducing the incidence of grapevine decline, an experiment was carried out with two rootstocks and three pre-planting tillage (regular plowing, drains, and ridges) in an area where high plant mortality had been previously observed. Pre-planting tillage with the use of ridges along the rows gave the best results with a drastic reduction in the decline incidence. the number of ground pearl cysts was unaffected by pre-planting tillage and did not relate with the incidence of decline and death of plants. CONTROLE DO DECLÍNIO DA VIDEIRA COM O USO DE DRENOS E CAMALHÕESRESUMO -a incidência de declínio e morte de plantas de videira é bastante comum nas regiões vitícolas do Sul do Brasil, especialmente no Vale do Rio do Peixe-Sc. estudos de campo realizados em áreas com grande incidência identificaram a presença de pérola-da-terra (Eurhizococcus brasiliensis Hempel) e fungos de solo (Cylindrocarpon, Fusarium e outros) associados à doença. Observou-se também que características de solo, como alta percentagem de argila e deficiência de aeração, estavam associadas ao problema. Para avaliar o efeito de sistemas de preparo do solo em pré-plantio na redução do declínio e morte de plantas de videira, implantou-se um experimento fatorial com dois porta-enxertos e três sistemas de preparo do solo em pré-plantio (preparo regular e confecção de drenos e camalhões) em área com histórico de alta mortalidade de plantas. A confecção de camalhões na linha de plantio proporcionou os melhores resultados, com redução significativa da incidência de declínio. O número de cistos de pérola-da-terra foi pouco afetado pela confecção de drenos ou de camalhões e não se correlacionou com a incidência de declínio e morte de plantas.
