Efficient Extraction and Structural Characterization of Hemicellulose from Sugarcane Bagasse Pith

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the ultrasound-assisted alkaline extraction process and structural properties of hemicellulose from sugarcane bagasse pith. Response surface model (RSM) was established in order to optimize the extraction conditions for the highest hemicellulose yield based on the single-factor experiments. A maximum total hemicellulose yield of 23.05% was obtained under the optimal conditions of ultrasonic treatment time of 28 min, KOH mass concentration of 3.7%, and extraction tempera… Show more

“…Besides, the principal hemicellulose of the rind is xylose (15.49%), followed by galactose (0.78%) and arabinose (0.03%), whereas the hemicellulose monosaccharide content of pith is very low. It is noteworthy that the pith has extremely lower lignin which distinguishes itself from the other stalk pith, e.g., pith from corn stalk (12.6% lignin, [ 24 ]), pith from sugarcane bagasse stalk (20.3% lignin, [ 25 ]), and pith from Miscanthus×giganteus stalk (19.4% lignin, [ 26 ]).…”

“…Hemicellulose was extracted from sugarcane bagasse pith using an ultrasound-assisted alkaline method according to our previous report [35]. PVA-1799 (alcoholysis degree = 99%; Mw = 75,000 g/mol) was purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China).…”

“…In most cases, a preliminary removal of extractives and nonpolymeric sugars is required, considered as impurities. [283,301] Hemicelluloses are mostly extracted by alkaline treatments using diluted aqueous NaOH or KOH solutions, but other treatments, for example, based on H 2 O 2 , have also been reported. [302] After solubilization, hemicelluloses are isolated by precipitation from the soluble phase.…”
