Relay cropping is a method that increases total productivity through maximum utilization of resources. In this study, we planned a field experiment, which was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishwardi, Pabna during 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 to find out the most suitable way of relaying mukhikachu (MU) with hybrid maize to get the maximum benefit. Seven treatments: T1= Relay at silking stage (100 DAS), T2 = Relay at the blister stage (110 DAS), T3 = Relay at the milk stage (120 DAS), T4 = Relay at the dough stage (130 DAS), T5 = Relay at the dent stage (140 DAS), T6 = Sole hybrid maize, T7 = Sole mukhikachu, were compared in the study. It was found that among the treatments (relay cropping and sole stand), there was no significant difference in terms of yield and attributes of both base (maize) and relay crop (mukhikachu). In the entire treatment, maize yielded 10.54-11.30 t ha-1 with results of 3.28-3.66 MJ m-2day-1 light energy interception (120 DAS), 2.68-2.84 LAI (120 DAS) and 1534.63-1592.69 g m-2 TDM (140DAS). The mukhikachu yielded 26.88-27.28 t ha-1 among the relay cropping system. Maize equivalent yield (MEY) and BCR ranged from 28.48-29.18 t ha-1 and 2.33-2.39, respectively, amongst the relay cropping treatments. The land equivalent ratio (LER) of the relay cropping treatment produced almost double (1.934-1.996) that of the sole crops. Farmers can benefit by adopting this relay cropping technology when they grow long-duration crops, and this technology can lead to improved system productivity.

An intercropping experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 to find out the suitable intercrop combination for increasing total productivity and returns. Seven treatments, viz. sole pointed gourd, two times lalshak + two rows turmeric in between pointed gourd lines, two times spinach + two rows turmeric in between pointed gourd lines, one time bushbean + two rows turmeric in between pointed gourd lines, two times lalshak + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines, two times spinach + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines and one time bushbean + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines were compared. All the intercropping combinations were higher in terms of pointed gourd equivalent yield, gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio (BCR) over sole crops. The highest pointed gourd equivalent yield (105.92 t ha -1 ) and gross return (Tk. 2118480 ha -1 ) was found from two times spinach + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines combination. The land equivalent ratio was observed highest (2.29) in same combination which was similar to one time bushbean + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines combination. One time bushbean + two rows ginger in between pointed gourd lines combination gave the highest monetary returns in respect of gross margin (Tk.1623333 ha -1 ) and BCR (4.19). The increases in total productivity in terms of pointed gourd equivalent yields were 53.72-128.62 t ha -1 in intercrop combination compared to base crop.

Intercropping system is a common method and it can increase the productivity, use efficiency of irrigation water and land and improve soil fertility. Therefore, the current investigation was conducted during 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2019/2020 seasons to study the effect of intercropping faba bean (main crop) -onion (secondary crop) on the yield and yield components and nutrient uptake. The experiment design was a randomized complete blocks, with three replicates. The experiment included 11 treatments of cropping system (sole faba bean, sole onion, 1faba bean:1 onion, 1faba bean:2onion, 1faba bean:3onion, 2faba bean:1onion, 2faba bean:2onion, 2faba bean:3onion, 3faba bean:1onion, 3faba bean:2onion and 3faba bean:3onion). Results showed that 1faba bean :3onion was not significantly different as compred, with sole onion and recorded the highest value of vegetative parameters; plant height (cm), leaf number, bulb diameter (cm) and plant fresh weight (g). Same trend was observed for yield and yield components, and nutrient uptake compared to other intercropping systems. However, regarding to faba bean vegetative characters, 3faba bean :1onion gave the greatest value with no significant difference comparing with sole faba bean and other intercropping systems treatments. Similar trend was observed for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake. Among all intercropping and sole faba bean treatments, 3faba bean:1onion recorded significant increase in total yield of faba bean with an increase percentage 13.51%, 16.55% and 13.84% during 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd seasons, respectively. Moreover, the highest land equivalent ratio was obtained with 3faba bean:1onion in the three seasons, which were 1.249, 1.248 and 1.275, respectively. This was followed by 1faba bean: 3onion, which were 0.999, 0.923 and 1.005 in the 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2019/2020 seasons, respectively. Taken together, the intercropping system of 3faba bean:1onion or 1faba bean: 3onion could be againful model to obtain the greatest use efficiency of land and irrigation water.
