Efficacy of simultaneous vaccination with Enterisol® Ileitis and Ingelvac® CircoFLEXTM in a Swiss breeding farm

Abstract: This study explores administration of two piglet vaccines as compared to the mono-and adjuvant-application. A vaccine against the Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) cap protein subunit and a vaccine with attenuated live culture against Lawsonia (L.) intracellularis were applied to piglets aged 23.5 days on average. 1'405 animals were divided randomly into four groups. One piglet group was immunized with both vaccines while two other groups were immunized with a combination of one vaccine and adjuvants of alterna… Show more

“…A positive ROI for the use of the vaccine was expected in this study, as it is demonstrated in previous studies [ 11 , 12 ]. For example, Park et al [ 11 ] estimated in their cost–benefit analysis a 4.2:1 ROI.…”

“…In the finishing unit, the mortality was about the same as in most similar herds. Other L. intracellularis vaccination studies report similar mortalities in the vaccination and control groups [ 10 , 11 ] or a lower mortality in the vaccination group [ 10 , 12 ]. The effect of the vaccine can be different at the farm level as shown in McOrist et al [ 10 ], which refers to the variable expression of the infection on different farms.…”

“…Treatment, Prevention, and Control Vaccination strategies have been tested and developed for pigs and horses, but not for rabbits (Nogueira et al, 2013;Pusterla et al, 2012b;Weibel et al, 2012). Testing rabbits by PCR prior to introduction to a laboratory colony may be necessary for exclusion of this organism.…”

“…In a case study, Bak & Rathkjen (2009), in a farm containing 15.656 swine with a nonvaccinated control group of 7.756 animals and a group of 7.900 vaccinated animals, it was shown that the vaccine was responsible for decreasing the use of oxytetracycline for LI control in 79%. Weibel et al, (2012) studied the association of vaccination against LI and circovirosis and concluded that the vaccination against LI was sufficient to reduce mortality from the farm and increase average daily gain. However, the use in association with the vaccine against circovirosis presented greater benefits.…”
