“…Scaling and root planing (SRP) is the main mechanical treatment (Heitz‐Mayfield & Lang, 2013) with variable success rates attributable to the local factors such as deep probing pocket depths (PPDs) and intra‐bony/furcation defects; in such circumstances, surgery may become mandatory for satisfactory healing (Drisko, 2001). For better SRP outcomes and reducing surgical need, several adjuncts including statins, bisphosphonates, metformin, antimicrobials, delivery systems, lasers and host modulators have been introduced (Abduljabbar et al, 2017; Akram, Abduljabbar, et al, 2017; Akram, Hyder, et al, 2017; Akram, Vohra, & Javed, 2018). At present, however, no adjunct is superior to another; thus, well‐conducted randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are still necessary to understand their value in treatment (Heitz‐Mayfield & Lang, 2013; Mombelli, 2018).…”

“…Considering the limitations of SRP, many commercially‐available adjunctives can be helpful in overcoming these shortcomings. Local and systemic antibiotics, photodynamic therapy, locally‐delivered statins, and metformin are some of the suggested adjunctives, among which the most widely used are systemic antibiotics. However, restoring symbiotic bacteria causes a change in the local environment, which could enable SRP to resolve inflammation and prevent further recolonization .…”

“…Low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) in dentistry has been used for longer than half a century and has enabled clinicians to achieve enhanced clinical results in the treatment of several oral diseases, including periodontal diseases, desquamative gingivitis, pigmented lesions, and GR defects. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Research indicates that LILT produces tissue surface sterilization and minimizes the chances of bacteremia, and decreases edema, swelling, and scarring. 14 In addition, LILT has been shown to successfully biostimulate and accelerate wound healing by stimulating epithelization and regeneration of human and animal tissue.…”
