Efficacy of newly developed denture cleaning device on physical properties of denture material and Candida biofilm

Abstract: Background/purposeElectrolyzed water has antimicrobial activity against oral microbes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a denture cleaning device that uses electrolyzed water on Candida biofilm on denture base-material and the physical properties of the denture material.Materials and methodsDenture base-resin disks were prepared with Polymethyl methacrylate. After the formation of Candida albicans biofilm on the resin disks, the antimicrobial activity of the denture cleaning device a… Show more

“…After soaking fruit in an EW water solution for as little as 10 minutes, fruit rot caused by the fungus Botryosphaeria berengeriana was suppressed in pears [17]. EW contains antifungal properties and can lower Candida albicans biofilm levels on denture resins: a denture storage and disinfection device [18]. EW has lately been recommended as the disinfectant of choice in an oral and maxillofacial surgery office [19] based on a recent study.…”

“…It significantly reduced five major periodontal pathogens when used as a mouthwash and for toothbrush disinfection, even when EW was produced via electrolysis of drinking water, without adding salt (11). EW also has antifungal activity and can reduce the levels of Candida albicans biofilm on denture resins; a denture storage and disinfection device based on EW was recently developed (12). Furthermore, running EW through dental unit waterlines, even for a short period, was found to be effective in minimizing microbial biofilm contamination in the waterlines; and its use reduced the count of viable bacteria to negligible levels in coolant water spray from handpieces and three-way syringes, thus ensuring output water of good microbiological quality (13,14).…”
