Efficacy of fumagillin against Thelohanellus kitauei infection of Israel carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus

Abstract: The potential of fumagillin dicyclohexylamine salt to treat and prevent intestinal giant-cystic disease in Israel carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus, was monitored in field experimental studies. In experiment 1 (therapeutic), most fish were already naturally infected with more advanced stage of Thelohanellus kitauei. Fumagillin was administered to fish (mean body weight of 830 g) for a period of one month at a dose of 10.62 mg in the first group and 5.3 mg in the second group per fish per day. In experiment 2 (prophy… Show more

“…Fumagillin is an antibiotic which has been reported to be the only efficacious chemotherapeutant against myxosporean diseases ( Molnár, Baska & Székely 1987; Hedrick, Groff, Foley & McDowell 1988; Székely, Molnár & Baska 1988; Wishkovsky, Groff, Lauren, Toth & Hedrick 1990; Yokoyama, Ogawa & Wakabayashi 1990; El‐Matbouli & Hoffmann 1991; Sitja‐Bobadilla & Alvarez‐Pellitero 1992; Rhee, Kim & Park 1993). To date, fumagillin treatment has not yet been practised in aquaculture because there are unresolved problems with toxic residues in the tissues and the withdrawal time of the drug.…”

“…Only the antibiotic fumagillin has currently been proved as an effective drug for the treatment of IGCD in South Korea by Rhee et al [11]. They pointed out that fumagillin should be administered before the disease develops, as the efficacy of the drug is limited only to the early stages of infection.…”

“…Since the mid-1980s, many researchers have reported successful oral treatments with the fungal anti biotic, fumagillin (Molnar et al, 1987;Hedrick et al, 1988;Szekely et al, 1988;Wishkovsky et al, 1990;Yokoyama et al, 1990;El-Matbouli and Hoffmann, 1991 b; Sitja-Bobadilla and Alvarez-Pellitero, 1992; Rhee et al, 1993;Yokoyama et al, 1999;Wang et al, 2001) and its analog TNP-470 (Higgins and Kent, 1998) against many myxozoan diseases (Table 1), except for ceratomyxosis (Izbarra et al, 1990;Whipple et al, 2002). However, the toxicities of these drugs have lim ited their practical application for farmed fish (Wishkovsky et al, 1990).…”
