Efficacy of eprinomectin against Toxocara vitulorum in calves

Abstract: This study was made to investigate efficacy of eprinomectin pour-on against to Toxocara vitulorum in calves. In the study, 16 calves naturally infected with T. vitulorum were divided into two groups as treatment (eight calves) and control (eight calves). Eprinomectin (0.5 mg/kg, Eprinex, Merial) was given to treatment group calves, and eggs per gramme were determined in the faeces on the day of pre-treatment and the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, 14th and 28th days of post-treatment. No side effects asso… Show more

“…In this regard, piperazine, pyrantel, febantel, oxfendazole, levamisole (16), ivermectin (17), fenbendazole (18), and eprinomectin (15) have exhibited efficacy against T. vitulorum. However, side effects including diarrhea and restlessness with parasite resistance were observed in some animals treated with piperazine citrate and other traditionally used antitoxocariasis agents (9). Therefore, searching for more efficacious and safe antitoxocariasis candidates is an urgent issue.…”

“…The adult buffalo is the source of infection while suckling calves play a potential role for maintenance of the infection. The larvae do not develop into adults in the adult animal but remain as third-stage larvae; when infected dams become pregnant, the larvae migrate from the liver to the mammary glands and suckling calves receive the infection via milk (9). Three to four weeks later, the larvae develop into adults and then begin shedding thousands of eggs in the feces of infected calves (15).…”

“…Adult stage T. vitulorum can be effectively treated with piperazine, pyrantel, febantel, and oxfendazole (Roberts 1989b), ivermectin (Mahieu and Naves 2008), fenbendazole (Davila et al 2010), and eprinomectin (Avcioglu and Balkaya 2011). Third-stage larvae of T. vitulorum in the intestine can be treated with pyrantel and levamisole (Roberts 1989b).…”
