Soybean meal (SBM) is the most widely used plant feedstuff as a fish meal replacement (FM) in the aquaculture industry (El-Sayed, 1999). However, there are some nutritional concerns, such as the defective essential amino acid profile and the existence of several anti-nutritional compounds, in SBM (Francis et al., 2001). In addition to growth retardation and SBM-induced enteritis, poor nutrient utilization has also been documented in fish fed the SBM-containing diet (National Research Council (NRC), 2011; Lin & Cheng, 2017).For example, depression in lipid digestibility was heeded in fish that received the SBM-based diet (Lin & Cheng, 2017;Yaghoubi et al., 2016). This may be relative to the oligosaccharides and non-starch polysaccharides derived from SBM, those compounds may bind to bile salts, change the viscosity and passage rate of digesta or hinder digestive enzymes (Francis et al., 2001). Furthermore, taurine deficiency in SBM can depress bile synthesis and also interfere with lipid digestion and absorption Romarheim et al., 2008).

Global fish oil production is expected to be unsustainable because of distinction of ocean stocks and high demand (Natale et al., 2013).These limitations have forced aquaculture industry to replace lipid sources (Oliva-Teles et al., 2015). Among the fat sources, fish oil has been an ideal option to be added in fish diet in case of having unsaturated fatty acids and higher digestibility. On the contrary, using terrestrially based lipids like vegetable oil and fat powder, as alternative fat sources, could decrease the requirement for fish oil but they may reduce lipid digestibility (Amirkolaie et al., 2014). BackgroundThis study hypothesizes that a natural multicomponent emulsifier (Lipidol) could improve production performance in broiler chickens by aiding lipid digestion and addressing digestive system limitations.ObjectivesThe study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary emulsifier inclusion on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology, faecal microbiology, blood biochemistry and liver enzyme activities of broiler chickens fed low‐energy diets.MethodsThe experiment involved 144 one‐day‐old male broiler chickens split into 4 treatments. Four diets were used: standard metabolizable energy (ME) as a control diet and three low‐ME diets, reducing by 100 kcal/kg by adding 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/kg of exogenous emulsifier (Em).ResultsNo significant differences were observed in body weight gain and feed intake. However, during the finisher period (25–42 days), supplementation emulsifier to low‐ME diets notably improved feed efficiency. Although crude protein, organic matter and ash digestibility remained unaffected, dry matter (DM) digestibility significantly increased in broilers fed low‐ME diets with emulsifier. Broilers receiving 0.5 g/kg of emulsifier showed the highest villus width and surface area values. Moreover, including 1.5 g/kg of emulsifier led to the highest villus height to crypt depth ratio. Faecal microbiota, blood biochemistry and liver enzyme activities showed no significant differences.ConclusionsEmulsifier supplementation compensated for the energy reduction and enhanced performance, DM digestibility and some intestinal morphology parameters in broiler chickens fed low‐ME diet. Using 0.5 g/kg of emulsifier per 100 kcal of ME reduction in broiler diets is suggested.
