“…The reason why the dextran 40 treatment seemed to fail [70] can be that dextran 40 has such a short half-life that the hemodilution is too shortacting always followed by a hemoconcentration phase. Another option is that the placebo treatment, which consisted of saline infusion, might also have had a therapeutic effect.…”

“…Spontaneous recovery may occur in patients with a slight degree, and no improvement can be expected in patients with profound hearing loss [17,18], All authors agree that, although ISHL appears to have a chance of spontaneous recovery during the first 2 weeks, sponta neous recovery is unlikely after 3 months. Treatment then is extremely difficult [2,7,17,18].…”

“…Effects of defibrinogenation therapy and steroid therapy were compared by a randomized, paired, double-blind method. The improvement rate in cases in which hearing recovered more than 30 dB -the marked recovery group by the Japanese standards -was significantly better in the defibrinogenation group [14]. In a nonrandomized control study of ·-interferon, an antiviral agent, complete recovery was found in 27 patients (64.3%) among 42 patients with the average hearing over 70 dB; this suggested the effectiveness of this drug [15].…”
