Idiopathic Sudden Hearing Loss and Disturbance of Iron Metabolism

Abstract: The role of disturbances of the iron metabolism (DIM) in idiopathic sudden hearing loss (ISHL) was investigated in 426 patients with ISHL who received iron therapy, anti-DIM medication, vitamins, and a combined regimen in a randomized study which was stratified by stages and groups. Low concentrations of haemoglobin, serum iron, serum ferritin, and red cell basic ferritin as well as abnormal circadian variations in the serum iron level were observed. The results were significantly better in patients receiving … Show more

“…Auditory dysfunction has been associated with deficiencies of several micronutrients in humans (6)(7)(8)(9) and young growing animals (10)(11)(12)(13)(14). However, we found no studies in humans or experimental animals that specifically examined the role of nutrition in age-related hearing loss.…”

“…Some researchers have described the association between ISSNHL and IDA, 4 , 5 with a recent American survey of adults indicating a significant relationship between IDA and SNHL with increased odds of 1.82. 6 A vascular mechanism has been proposed to explain the hearing loss due to IDA in that the cochlea is highly susceptible to ischemic damage, since only the labyrinthine artery supplies blood to this area.…”

“…Roughly 360 million people around the world have some form of hearing loss and 32 million of these are children [1]. Dietary intake may play a role in the pathogenesis of many auditory disorders [2]. Deficiencies of several micronutrients have been associated with auditory dysfunction disorders in humans [3] and young growing animals [4].…”
