Low-Frequency Sensorineural Hearing Loss Associated With Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Abstract: Past studies have found an association between cochlear hydrops or early Meniere’s disease and acute low-frequency hearing loss (ALHL) without vertigo. However, its mechanism remains unclear in some ALHL cases. This report presents a case of ALHL associated with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). The patient was a 49-year-old female who had previously been treated with betamethasone for sudden hearing loss in the right ear. Eight months later, the symptoms recurred and cochlear hydrops was diagnosed. Isosorbide and… Show more

“…The main recognised pathogenetic mechanisms include mechanical obstruction of the endolymphatic vessels and impaired endolymphatic absorption, the immune response theory, and the inner ear ischaemia theory. Acute hypotonic sensorineural hearing loss is a syndrome with a distinctive clinical and auditory presentation, with ear congestion as the main symptom [ 10 , 11 ], an elusive cause, and the development of Meniere's disease if not treated promptly. It was suggested [ 12 ] that the disease is related to endolymphatic hydrops, and patients with acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss are often associated with vestibular impairment regardless of the presence of vertigo.…”

“…Despite this, multiple studies have linked cochlear hydrops and ALHL to the early onset of Meniere's illness. 13 Abe as quoted by Sato reported a study of 39 patients with ALHL with unclear causes. All patients experience complete healing without recurrence and symptom fluctuations.…”

“…The concern is that, in pregnant women, IDA is associated with fetal growth retardation, the intellectual development of newborns, and high susceptibility to infections. Anemia is not only a kind of hematological disease but is also associated with sensorineural hearing loss [7] [8] [9], depression [10], thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy [11], fibromyalgia [12], venous thromboembolism [13], ischemic stroke [14], heart failure [15], cancer [16], affecting the treatment and prognosis of these diseases. Hence, correcting IDA is of great significance to improving the quality of life of the broad masses of people and reducing the occurrence of adverse events.…”
