Efficacy and tolerability of propolis special extract gh 2002 as a lip balm against herpes labialis: a randomized, double-blind three-arm dose finding study

Abstract: A dose-finding study was performed with respect to the clinical applicability and tolerability of three different concentrations of propolis special extract GH 2002 in a lip balm (0.1%, 0.5% and 1%). The trial was designed as a double-blind, randomized dermatological study in 150 outpatients with Herpes labialis. The primary parameter was the duration in days until painless incrustation in 50% or 90% of the patients (observable in 121 patients). Secondary parameters were local pain (assessed on a visual analog… Show more

“…Dermatological studies [ 8 , 29 ] performed with the special propolis extract GH 2002 (with pollen, waxes and resins removed to reduce the risk of allergic reactions) confirm the in vitro results and verified that significant results were achieved in the treatment of herpes labialis, applying 0.5% of this active substance in a cream. Recently, a single-blind study in 379 herpes labialis patients showed significant therapeutic results in favor of a cream with 0.5% GH 2002 compared with aciclovir cream 5%, both for the primary parameter incrustation/healing and for the secondary parameters pain, itching, swelling and tension [ 9 ].…”

“…Antiviral effects of the special propolis extract preparation GH 2002 applied in this trial have been demonstrated in several open studies aimed on the treatment of herpes labialis [ 29 , 31 ] and herpes zoster [ 30 ], including an examination of the dose and effect [ 29 ]. A recent study under blinded conditions examined the effects GH 2002 against herpes labialis in patients included in the early stages of the episode [ 9 ].…”

“…8 A clinical dose-finding study compared concentrations of 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% of propolis extract GH 2002 in a lip balm for the treatment of herpes labialis. 9 The study resulted in the recommendation of 0.5% as a concentration with a sufficiently strong effect and an acceptable level of safety. The latter point was also examined and confirmed in an open observational study.…”

“…Its antiviral, antibacterial and antiphlogistic as well as locally anaesthetic properties make propolis special extract GH 2002 especially suitable for local application, as demonstrated in clinical studies on the treatment of Herpes labialis [11] [12].…”
