Lip creams with propolis special extract GH 2002 0.5% versus aciclovir 5.0% for herpes labialis (vesicular stage)

Abstract: Summary A lip cream with special propolis extract GH 2002 at a concentration of 0.5% (199 patients) was tested against aciclovir 5% (198 patients) in the treatment of episodes of herpes labialis under double-blind conditions. Upon inclusion, all patients were in the vesicular phase. Application was five times daily of approximately 0.2 g of cream to the entire upper and lower lip. The primary parameter was the difference in time between groups to complete encrustation or epithelization of the lesion… Show more

“…A following double‐blind, randomized, multicentre trial with 400 patients evaluated the effect of 0.5% GH 2002 lip cream, compared with 5% acyclovir, for the treatment of the vesicular stage of herpes labialis. This time, the primary endpoint was reached after 3 days with propolis and 4 days with acyclovir, and, also in this case, significant differences in favor of propolis treatment were observed for the secondary parameters 71 . Altogether, these results show the overall efficacy of the topical application of GH 2002 propolis extract against herpes labialis, irrespective of the stage of the disease, susbstantiating the activity against HSV‐1 previously observed in vitro.…”

“…Due to the high number of participants in this single study, we included the patients as soon as HSL occurred, leading to a higher number of enrolled females. Comparable studies also did not consider the unbalanced proportion of male to female participants in the recruitment 22,27,28 . This can be considered a limitation of this study, but the advantage of this study is the high number of participants.…”

“…Although little literature about the antiviral activity of propolis in clinical studies exists, in 2019, Jautová et al reported that one lip cream with propolis extract from Central Europe produced a better effect than acyclovir to treat patients with herpes labialis in the vesicular phase, confirming the clinical efficacy of lip cream composed of European propolis in the early and late start of treatment during an episode of herpes labialis [ 200 ]. Similarly, a clinical study reported the contribution of propolis extract from Central Europe as a constituent in a lotion for complementary treatment of Herpes zoster.…”
