Background Air abrasion (AA) is one of the decontamination methods that have demonstrated promising results in treating peri‐implant diseases. Purpose This systematic review aimed at evaluating the in vitro effect of AA on surface change, cleaning efficacy, and biocompatibility of titanium surfaces and at comparing it with other decontamination methods. Materials and Methods A comprehensive search was conducted up to April 2018 using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases to identify studies on the decontamination effect of AA. All types of titanium surfaces, abrasive powders, contaminated surfaces, and measuring methods were included. Results Overall, 1502 articles were identified. After screening the titles and abstracts, and carefully reading the full‐texts, 48 articles published between 1989 and 2018 were selected. AA was considered almost safe, particularly for the nonmodified surfaces. Nevertheless, harder powders such as sodium bicarbonate tended to damage the surface more than glycine. AA resulted in surface change similar to plastic curettes and Er: YAG lasers. Regarding the cleaning efficacy, there was no significant difference between glycine and sodium bicarbonate, but different mixtures of calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, and erythritol were superior to glycine. AA was superior or equal to all other decontamination methods in cleaning. Regarding biocompatibility, AA was more successful in preserving biocompatibility for noncontaminated surfaces compared with contaminated surfaces and when used with erythritol and osteoinductive powders. Conclusions AA can efficiently remove contamination without serious damage to the surface. The main drawback of the AA method seems to be its limitation in restoring the biocompatibility of the surface.

ObjectiveTo assess which decontamination method(s) used for the debridement of titanium surfaces (disks and dental implants) contaminated with bacterial, most efficiently eliminate bacterial biofilms.Material and MethodsA systematic search was conducted in four electronic databases between January 1, 2010 and October 31, 2022. The search strategy followed the PICOS format and included only in vitro studies completed on either dental implant or titanium disk samples. The assessed outcome variable consisted of the most effective method(s)—chemical or mechanical— removing bacterial biofilm from titanium surfaces. A meta‐analysis was conducted, and data was summarized through single‐ and multi‐level random effects model (p < .05).ResultsThe initial search resulted in 5260 articles after the removal of duplicates. After assessment by title, abstract, and full‐text review, a total of 13 articles met the inclusion criteria for this review. Different decontamination methods were assessed, including both mechanical and chemical, with the most common method across studies being chlorhexidine (CHX). Significant heterogeneity was noted across the included studies. The meta‐analyses only identified a significant difference in biofilm reduction when CHX treatment was compared against PBS. The remaining comparisons did not identify significant differences between the various decontamination methods.ConclusionsThe present results do not demonstrate that one method of decontamination is superior in eliminating bacterial biofilm from titanium disk and implant surfaces.

An adequate mucosal attachment is important when it comes to preventing periimplant inflammation. The aim of this study was to compare epithelial cell adhesion and adhesion protein expression on in sol TiO 2 -coated and non-coated zirconia and titanium alloy surfaces. Fifty-six zirconia and titanium discs were cut, and half of them were coated with bioactive TiO 2 -coating. To study the epithelial cell attachment, human gingival keratinocytes were cultivated on discs for 1, 3, 6, and 24 h.The cell proliferation was detected by cultivating cells for 1, 3, and 7 days. In addition, the levels of adhesion proteins laminin y2, integrin α6, β4, vinculin, and paxillin were detected with Western Blot method. Furthermore, high-resolution imaging of the actin cytoskeleton and focal adhesion proteins was established. Longer-term cell culture (1-7 days) revealed higher cell numbers on the coated zirconia and titanium discs compared to non-coated discs. The difference was statistically significant (p < .05) after 24 h on coated zirconia and after 3 and 7 days on coated titanium discs compared to non-coated discs.
