Effects of Er,Cr:YSGG laser parameters on dentin bond strength and interface morphology

Abstract: Previous studies have shown the effects of Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation on the dentin bond strength; but there are few reports that show the significance of the irradiation with different laser parameters on dentin bond strength and interface morphology. This in-vitro study attempted to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and interface morphology of resin-dentin interfaces, either followed by treatment with Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation with different parameters or not. The flattened dentin samples o… Show more

“…No direct correlation between Er,Cr:YSGG laser power and surface roughness of lased dentin was found [27]. Different laser parameters and their effect on dentin bond strength were previously evaluated [38]. It was shown that all dentin lased groups exhibited decreased bond strength and no significant differences were observed regardless of the laser parameters used [38].…”

“…The µTBS of self-etch adhesive on bovine teeth was compared with the control group. The results showed that different laser irradiation settings negatively affected the bonding strength of the adhesive systems at the resin-dentin interfaces (42). In another study, the µTBS of dentin surfaces irradiated with Er:YAG and Er, Cr: YSGG lasers were examined, and samples treated with laser irradiation had lower µTBS values than the control group (43).…”

“…28,29 These morphological alternations might negatively affect resin hybridization. 30 During dentin laser irradiation, heat is generated, resulting in thermal denaturation of the collagen, breaking of the hydrogen bonds, and three-polypeptide chains in a triple helical molecular structure, which results in an irreversible transformation and shrinkage of the collagen fiber network. 31 To minimize the effect of erbium laser irradiation on dentin, proper laser parameters should be selected.…”
