Effects of Rolling and Sand Topdressing on Dollar Spot Severity in Fairway Turfgrass

Abstract: Results suggest that sand topdressing was more consistent at reducing dollar spot (Clarireedia jacksonii) in fairway turfgrass more so than rolling. This practice could be an effective cost-saving alternative to reduce frequent fungicide applications. Research was conducted from 2011 to 2014 on a simulated golf fairway and examined dollar spot severity responses in a mixed-stand of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and annual bluegrass ( Show more

“…If cultivation practices require the additional input of sand topdressing to effectively reduce OM levels, the next logical conclusion would be that topdressing alone is adequate for mitigating OM accumulation. Like the core cultivation work, a wide variety of sand topdressing frequencies (every other week to once a year) and rates [(0.01 cm (0.15 kg m 2 ) to 0.95 cm (14.65 kg m 2 )] have been explored (Barton et al, 2009;Carrow et al, 1987;Dunn et al, 1995;Green et al, 2019;Kowalewski et al, 2010;McCarty et al, 2007;Obasa et al, 2013;Proctor et al, 2014;Smith, 1979;Schmid et al, 2014;Stier and Hollman, 2003;Wang et al, 2015). Together, these studies indicate the possibility of managing OM with sand topdressing alone.…”

“…Sand topdressing objectives include smoothing the putting surface, controlling thatch, modifying the soil surface, and firming the surface (Rieke, 1999). It has been hypothesized that sand topdressing may increase disease; however, research indicates that frequent sand topdressing can enhance recovery of anthracnose (Inguagiato, Murphy, & Clarke, 2007) or lessen the severity of dollar spot (Green, Rogers, Crum, Vargas, & Nikolai, 2019). Sand topdressing is acknowledged as firming the surface which could decrease VWD from foot traffic.…”

“…Various cultural practices are employed by turfgrass managers to prevent and mitigate damage caused by dollar spot. Green et al (2019) determined that sand topdressing fairways could reduce disease by up to 50% at peak dollar spot activity. Additionally, rolling three times weekly has been shown to reduce dollar spot (Nikolai et al, 2001).…”
