Abstract: Imbalance in the resident microbiota may promote the growth of opportunistic microorganisms, such as yeasts of Candida genus and the development of diseases, especially in aged people. This study evaluated whether the consumption of the probiotic Yakult LBz(®) (Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium breve) was able to influence on the specific immunological response against Candida and on the presence of these yeasts in the oral cavity of 42 healthy aged individuals. Saliva samples were collected before and a… Show more

“…In this study, the saliva samples were collected three times a week for 30 days before and after consuming probiotics. The results showed a remarkable decrease in the prevalence of Candida (from 92.9% to 85.7%) (21). In the present study, the laboratory study on antagonistic effects of isolated probiotic bacteria also showed their inhibitory effect by inhibiting the growth of Candida species.…”

“…A widely available probiotic-laced drink containing Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium breve was able to reduce the prevalence of oral Candida in healthy individuals [39]. A significant increase in anti-Candida immunoglobulin A levels was associated with probiotic consumption [39]. In contrast, the identical product did not significantly affect the oral candidal colonization in complete denture wearers [33] and in healthy dentate people [34], after 4 weeks of administration.…”

“…These fi ndings were confi rmed in two later studies following consumption of yoghurt containing lactobacilli and bifi dobacteria spp. (Dos Santos et al 2009 ;Mendonca et al 2012 ). The probiotic concept has also been proven effective in reducing the number of Candida species in patients with Candida -associated stomatitis (Li et al 2014 ) and in candidiasis-asymptomatic elderly denture wearers (Ishikawa et al 2015 ).…”
