“…Our previous animal experiments revealed that phytosterol ester (PSE) intervention attenuates hepatic steatosis by regulating the expression of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), TGF-β2, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), uncoupling protein 2 (UCP-2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) and PPAR-γ in hepatic tissue at both the mRNA and protein levels and regulates the fatty acid metabolic profile and gut microbiota dysbiosis in NAFLD rats. [17][18][19] Moreover, plant-and food-derived sterols possess antioxidant, metabolism-regulating, and anti-inflammatory activities.
