Effects of ozone therapy and taurine on ischemia/reperfusion-induced testicular injury in a rat testicular torsion model

Abstract: Background/aim: To investigate the effect of ozone and/or taurine treatment comparatively on testicular damage due to ischemia/ reperfusion (I/R) injury in an experimental torsion model in rats.Materials and methods: Adult Wistar rats with and without torsion/detorsion were used. In order to monitor the effect of ozone and/ or taurine treatment on testicular damage due to I/R injury, following histopathological investigation apoptotic indexes were scored by TUNEL method. Moreover, tumor necrosis factor recepto… Show more

“…The author reported that exposure to KBrO 3 alters the histology of the rat testis and impaired spermatogenesis. The antioxidant effect of taurine and its protective effect against apoptosis and germ cell degeneration resulting from testicular torsion was reported by Aydos, Başar, Kul, Atmaca, Uzunalioğlu, Kisa, & Efe, 2014).…”

“…Taurine is an organic acid present in mammalian tissues with proven anti‐oxidant properties, and has been used previously in testicular I‐R models . It was found to have a beneficial effect on the ischemic testis; not only could it significantly decrease histopathological damage, apoptosis and MDA, as well as markers for neutrophil, MPO levels, but also could reverse the I‐R injury‐induced damage to spermatogenesis …”

“…Oxygen-ozone therapy causes an increase in the rate of red blood cell glycolysis, causing the stimulation of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, which leads to an increase in oxygen released to the tissues 13. It also causes a reduction in NADH and helps to oxidize cytochrome C 14. It increases the production of interferon, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-2, activating the immune system 15.…”
