Effects of miR-144 on the sensitivity of human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cells to cisplatin by autophagy regulation

Abstract: MiR-144 could inhibit autophagy of ATC cells by down-regulating TGF-α, enhancing the cisplatin-sensitivity of ATC cells.

“…In terms of chemoresistance, miR-144 reversed 5-FU and imatinib resistance respectively in HCC ( 461 ) and leukemia ( 462 ). In addition, miR-144 might promote cisplatin sensitivity in prostate cancer ( 463 ) and in thyroid carcinoma ( 464 ). Whereas miR-144-3p contributed to sunitinib resistance in RCC by targeting ARID1A, a cancer gene involved in chromatin remodeling ( 465 ).…”

“…For example, the miR-34c-induced silencing of MC3T3-E1 reduces the inhibitory effect of vaspin on osteoblast differentiation (23); furthermore, miRNA (miR)-433-3p can regulate osteoblastic differentiation by targeting Dickkopf-1 ( DKK1 ) (24). As an important miRNA, miR-144 is known to be involved in the occurrence and development of various human diseases, including ovarian cancer (25), cervical cancer (26) and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (27). For example, miR-144 acts as a tumor suppressor in osteosarcoma by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis (28).…”

“…In cervical cancer cells, miR-144 reversed resistance to cisplatin via promoting cell apoptosis and inhibiting invasion through targeting of LIM homeobox 2 (LHX2) [104]. In addition to all of that, enhancing miR-144 expression could remarkably sensitize anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) cells to cisplatin through suppressing transforming growth factor (TGF)-α [105]. TGF-α is an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-related protein, and is highly expressed in most kinds of thyroid carcinomas.…”
