Effects of microcurrent application and 670 nm InGaP low-level laser irradiation on experimental wound healing in healthy and diabetic Wistar rats

Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of microcurrent application and 670 nm InGaP laser irradiation on wound healing in healthy and alloxan diabetic rats. The animals were divided into eight groups: healthy control (HC); diabetic control (DC); healthy treated with microcurrent (HMC); diabetic treated with microcurrent (DMC); healthy irradiated with laser (HL); diabetic irradiated with laser (DL); healthy receiving laser and microcurrent application (HLMC) and diabetic receiving laser and microcurrent application (… Show more

“…TGF-β1 is expressed at the beginning of the repair of injured tissues, when it exerts a chemoattractive effect on neutrophils, macrophages and fibroblasts to the inflammatory site [70]. Neves et al [51] observed an increase in TGF-β1 expression at the beginning of skin wound healing irradiated with laser and a decrease in late stages of repair excisional wounds in healthy and diabetic rats. The same was observed in our study.…”

“…For this purpose, the animals were immobilised without sedation and treated daily at the same time for 21 days. Daily treatment was chosen according to the literature and experimental designs previously conducted by our and other research groups [15,17,24,51,52].…”

“…Two different types of laser (670-InGaP and 830-nm GaAlAs) are used for Chiarotto et al [8] in the treatment of second-degree burns in rats and it was observed that the laser 670-nm InGaP was more effective in increasing the numbers fibroblast at the injury site. Other authors have also demonstrated the beneficial effects of low intensity laser in tissue repair using 670nm [6,23,24].…”

“…These results are in accordance with the literature that considers the laser as an angiogenesis stimulator [ 30 ]. Neves et al [ 31 ] studied the effect of laser irradiation 670-nm InGaP on excisional wounds in Wistar rats and observed that this approach also promoted an increase in angiogenesis at the injury site. Similarly, Sousa et al [ 32 ] observed significant angiogenic effects promoted by low-level laser therapy in skin burns and excisional wounds on the back of Wistar rats, respectively.…”
