Effects of MgCl2 supplementation on blood parameters and kidney injury of rats exposed to CCl4

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the beneficial effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation upon carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) toxicity. Our study was carried out on 24 Wistar male rats divided into 4 batches. During a 6 week period, one group served as a control, two groups received Mg (after 4 weeks one of these groups was then treated with CCl4), and a final group was treated with CCl4 only. Under our experimental conditions, CCl4 poisoning resulted in oxidative stress indicated by a significant increa… Show more

“…74 There are various experimental evidences that explained the Mg antioxidant defensive role against various toxic substances. 54,75,76 Therefore, the current research was carried out to explore the cellular antioxidant potency of Mg supplementation on animal models of hepatic and renal toxicity provoked by 2,4-D. It is incredible to observe the beneficial effects of Mg in the present findings against toxicity development.…”

“…As revealed in the literature, Mg has a beneficial effect on blood morphology under various pathological and physiological conditions. Magnesium supplementation in rats exposed to carbon tetrachloride inhibited the toxicity of this solvent and prevented changes in blood parameters such as WBC, RBC, Hb, MCHC, and PLT [40]. Oral supplementation with Mg prevents dehydration of erythrocytes and improves the function of the blood cell membrane in patients with sickle cell anemia [41].…”

“…The increase in leukocyte count can be explained by the toxic damage caused by the defense system response to the fish or by stressed fish trying to establish homoeostasis balance [31]. The increase in platelet count can be demonstrated by the amount of xenobiotic substance in the body, the adverse effects on the blood-dependent immune system, the decrease in the amount of oxygen in the blood cells, and the response to the spleen [32]. In the case of hypoxia, fishes increase the amount of MCV and MCH of erythrocytes to get through this condition.…”
